The upcoming budget announcement reveals a substantial new investment aimed at addressing the NHS’s backlog and improving service capacity. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce a package that includes £1.5 billion for establishing new surgical hubs and procuring essential scanners, along with £70 million for upgrading radiotherapy machines. This funding is anticipated to enable around two million additional NHS appointments annually. Furthermore, an additional £1.8 billion is allocated to support elective procedures since July, with the aim of reducing long waiting times. However, both Reeves and Health Secretary Wes Streeting have acknowledged the limits of this funding. Streeting has noted that, given the NHS’s challenges, this budget alone won’t be enough to prevent issues like patients waiting in corridors during peak winter demand. Despite these challenges, Reeves framed the investment as a step towards reversing what she described as years of “neglect and underinvestment” and highlighted the NHS as a core component of Britain’s social infrastructure. This budget, expected to be delivered on Wednesday, is part of broader efforts to bolster the NHS amid rising pressures on healthcare services.

Baroness Gillian Merron, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Patient Safety, has introduced a roadmap to phase out avoidable single-use medical technologies by 2045, shifting towards a circular system focused on reuse, remanufacture, and recycling. Backed by Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, this UK wide plan promotes circularity in MedTech to extend product lifespan, improve patient care, support a net-zero NHS, and drive innovation. The roadmap sets four key goals: boost UK growth, strengthen NHS resilience, reduce waste and emissions, and cut costs. It outlines 30 actions, including encouraging behavioural change, developing new standards, enhancing recycling infrastructure, and fostering scientific partnerships.

Optimising technology could help the NHS overcome digital transformation hurdles, even as financial challenges slow investments, according to a report by Philips. The Future Health Index UK&I report, based on a survey of 200 UK healthcare leaders, highlights that automation can significantly reduce staffing pressures, with 85% of leaders supporting automation of repetitive tasks and 76% believing it empowers the workforce. However, financial constraints hinder new technology investments, with 97% of leaders facing budget challenges and 77% experiencing delays or limited funding for equipment. These financial pressures have led to longer waiting times and delays in care access, affecting 71% of healthcare leaders. A recent review by Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham OM KBE PC FRS and NHS Providers highlights concerns over NHS operational budgets and infrastructure spending. With further budget cuts anticipated in the upcoming Autumn Statement, Philips emphasises the need for efficient investment in technology to drive transformation. Mark Leftwich, Managing Director of Philips UK & Ireland, stresses that deploying technology across care settings and focusing on digital innovation will be essential to enhancing productivity and shifting care closer to home, ultimately unlocking the NHS’s true potential.
