The YW is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
About us
About the YWCA of the City of New York Established in 1858, the YWCA of the City of New York (YW-NYC) is one of the nation’s oldest nonprofit organizations committed to the personal, physical, and social development of women, their families, and communities. YW-NYC was the first charity focused on women’s rights in New York City and, for nearly 160 years, has paved the way for women and girls. Our mission—to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all—is achieved through our Girls Initiatives focused on High School girls and community-based programs which include after-school services; and college and career readiness programs. Today, the YW-NYC operates in 7 program locations, providing more than a million hours of support and serving 1,500 people annually in neighborhoods with some of the highest poverty rates in NYC. YW-NYC has played a significant role in advancing gender equity and racial justice since its inception and has reignited its public commitment to addressing a dearth in leadership opportunities for NYC women, girls, and gender-fluid individuals, particularly those of color. All of our efforts seek to empower New York City’s girls – especially from underserved communities – to break free from economic, social, gender and racial constraints and become productive citizens and successful leaders. Our programs are designed to create an inclusive community for self-identified girls and non-gender-conforming individuals to learn, collaborate and commune with other youth dedicated to social justice and activism. https://linktr.ee/ywcanyc

On August 13th, Estée Lauder Companies Travel Retail hosted an inspiring in-person Career Day for young women from our Girls Initiatives program at their NYC office. The event provided an insightful overview of Estée Lauder Companies and its Travel Retail division and highlighted various career paths within the beauty industry. The day also underscored the company’s strong commitment to Inclusion, Diversity & Equity (ID&E). Students were paired with ELC Travel Retail employees based on their fields of interest, offering personalized mentorship and guidance. A highlight of the day was the opportunity for the girls to create their own lip gloss, sparking creativity and hands-on learning. The students left the event beaming with excitement and gratitude, inspired by the engaging and informative program. A big thank you to The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., Jennifer Grant, and Michelle Choi-Kim for making this day so memorable!

On August 14th, thanks to Latinas On the Verge of Excellence - L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program, we connected with Maria Jose, the founder of Santa Rosa Flora. She hosted a powerful panel discussion, sharing her journey as an undocumented college student and the influences that led her to entrepreneurship. The event also featured a hands-on floral workshop, where students experimented with cyanotype printing—a unique photographic technique using natural sunlight. This experience provided insight into the incredible work Maria Jose does at her company and inspired students to explore their potential paths to entrepreneurship.

To support the College and Career Readiness summer program for Girls Initiatives, we hosted a panel discussion for 20 rising juniors and seniors this week. A big thank you to our panelists—Helen Feng and friends of the YPLC, Jazmine Brite and Vanessa Tanicien—for generously sharing their time and insights. Vanessa kicked off the session with an energizing icebreaker before the panelists dove into discussing their careers in business consulting, engineering, and workplace training and development. Topics ranged from essential skills and typical workdays to finding the right company culture and navigating male-dominated fields.
