✨ Today we're celebrating Career Development Counselor, Alondra Guzman! YWCA Yakima is on a mission to empower women. #52women52weeks was created to celebrate and highlight the amazing women & #SHEros in the #yakimavalley. We are proud to share more about Alondra below: Q: What is one word that describes you perfectly? A: Compassionate Q: What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders? A: My advice for the next generation of female leaders is to support and uplift one another. Stand together, and grow collectively, as meaningful change, cannot be achieved by one person alone. Care for others with the same consideration and respect that you would like to receive. By fostering a strong sense of community and mutual support you can drive progress and create a positive impact. Q: If you could have one super power what would it be? A: My advice for the next generation of female leaders is to support and uplift one another. Stand together, and grow collectively, as meaningful change, cannot be achieved by one person alone. Care for others with the same consideration and respect that you would like to receive. By fostering a strong sense of community and mutual support you can drive progress and create a positive impact. Q: How do you measure success? A: I measure success by personal growth and progress. Success is a deeply individual concept. It’s defined by one’s own goals, achievement, and the journey towards them. For me, success is not about comparing oneself to others, but rather recognizing and celebrating own progress and accomplishments. Q: I am empowered by... A: I am empowered by the resilience of my parents who gave me everything they never had and always put their children’s needs before their own. Their selflessness and dedication inspire me daily and motivate me to strive for the same level of commitment and perseverance in my own life. ⭐ Do you know a woman that should be celebrated? Recently, the representation (or misrepresentation) of abusive relationships in movies and tv shows has become a big topic of conversation. While there are plenty of films that depict abusive relationships, there are several misconceptions that can distort the public's understanding of these situations. Below are a few common ones: 1️⃣ Abuse is always physical: Movies often focus on physical violence as the primary or only form of abuse. However, abuse can also be emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual. 2️⃣ The abuser's backstory justifies their behavior: Movies sometimes explore an abuser's traumatic past to explain or even justify their actions. While understanding an abuser's background can provide context, it is not an excuse for abusive behavior. 3️⃣ Women are almost always the victim: In films, men are almost always the perpetrator and women are almost always the victim. That is far from the truth - in reality, 1 in 4 men will experience domestic violence. ☎️ If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please reach out. We're here to help. Call our helpline at (509) 248-7796, send us an email at hello@ywcayakima.org, or send us a message via social media. You are never alone.

YWCA Yakima is on a mission to raise the final $1,000,000 to expand our emergency shelter. Every year, too many victims of domestic violence are turned away due to a lack of space. With your help, we can change that. The incredible donation of the historic St. Elizabeth Nursing School by Hogback Development will allow us to triple our capacity, providing a safe space for more families and offering them the support they need to rebuild their lives. Together, we can provide safety, hope, and a fresh start to those who need it the most. Your contribution makes all the difference in the world to those experiencing domestic violence. ✨ This week we're excited to be celebrating Perla Bolaños Zapien, Program Coordinator for the Washington Student Achievement Council! YWCA Yakima is on a mission to empower women. #52women52weeks was created to celebrate and highlight the amazing women & #SHEros in the #yakimavalley. We are proud to share more about Perla below: Q: What is one word that describes you perfectly? A: Dedicated Q: What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders? A: Create a vision of the female leader you aspire to be, one defined by purpose and strength. Direct your energy toward a future that aligns with your deepest values and ambitions. Stay humble and grounded, always respecting the journey that has shaped you. Your background is the foundation of your growth, and it is what will continue to mold you into the leader you are destined to become. Strive to be the woman you would admire, leading with grace, wisdom, and integrity—someone your younger self would look up to with pride. Q: If you could have one super power what would it be? A: Time travel! I would love to do more cultural and personal exploration by traveling to different eras to understand different cultures and societies. I could also visit my own past, relive memories, and gain new insights about myself. Q: How do you measure success? A: If what I did uplifted those around me, then I know it was a success. Taking time to reflect on our achievements is crucial because we often overlook how far we've come. Remember, with each passing day, you draw closer to realizing your life’s goals. Q: I am empowered by... A: My mother and sisters. Four strong women who made the most of what they had. From their journeys, I learned the importance of compassion, respect, and humility—values that guide me every step of the way. ⭐ Do you know a woman that should be celebrated? How can you support a loved one in an abusive relationship? Knowing someone you care about is in an abusive relationship can be heartbreaking. Here are ways you can support them: 1️⃣ Listen Without Judgement: Let them share their story at their own time and at their own pace. 2️⃣ Offer Support: Remind them they are not alone. Let them know you are there for them and provide emotional support without pressuring them to make decisions. 3️⃣ Share Resources: Give information about our shelter, including our crisis line at (509) 248-7796.
