Destination marketing organizations need to be good marketers. Destination *management* organizations need to be *great* marketers. Building a summer marketing campaign for your postcard-ready places that light up Instagram or the “Places to Visit” carousel on Google? That’s comparatively easy. Marketing your off-off-Main Street activities, promoting the rural communities with one hotel and a single diner, or generating demand when the snow is high and occupancy is low? That takes marketing excellence. And it is important work for DMOs to do. In our latest blog, Jay Kinghorn, Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Zartico, shares the destination's playbook for marketing success. Good marketing isn’t enough, but great marketing is within reach. Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/gxBV3pUE

"Founder mode" or "manager mode"? Zartico CEO Sarah Lehman gives her take on the two leadership styles and shares the lessons learned from her years of experience.💡

I recently shared my thoughts regarding the “founder mode” or “manager mode” leadership styles with PhocusWire. “After being part of four startups, two as CEO, I can state unequivocally: the founder vs. manager debate is not just wrong — it’s dangerously misleading.” Not all input is created equal, and blindly following either the "founder's vision" or "management best practices" is a recipe for disaster. I believe Entrepreneurial Leadership is a paradigm that renders the old dichotomy obsolete. It's about having the vision to see what others don't, the humility to learn what you don't know, and the guts to make tough calls when it matters most. Here are a few lessons learned from the battlefield of experience: ➡️ The founder's dilemma of attachment vs. adaptability is real.  Many struggle because they're too emotionally invested in the original vision. The answer is certainly not hiring an MBA but rather, separating ego from the company's needs, allowing for objective decision-making and necessary pivots. Eric Ries argues that failure happens not because of a lack of effort, but because of “successfully executing the wrong plan.” His guidance is to assume there are going to be pivots and recognize that your job is to accelerate the learning until you get it right. ➡️ Managing the emotional journey of a startup is not for the faint of heart.  I always say, the highs are high and the lows are low. But managing the emotional journey isn't just personal — it's a key leadership responsibility. You're not just managing your own emotions, but often those of the entire team. I think about myself as a force field that is constantly engaged… protecting myself, my team, and my company. ➡️ Emotional decision-making is a pitfall that can sink companies.  Early in my career, the biggest and most costly mistakes I made were when I was reactive, which was often exacerbated by my exhaustion due to the grueling travel schedule I thought I needed to keep. I have since realized the importance of self care and giving myself space between the stimulus and the response — space to be responsive not reactive. ➡️ Paradoxically, emotional detachment can be a powerful tool.  For me, getting out on a trail run or meditating are critical to have clarity of thought. The most successful entrepreneurial leaders can maintain a degree of emotional distance from the business, allowing them to make tough decisions without personal anguish. In my experience, this approach isn't just effective — it's the only path to building and scaling businesses in today's ruthlessly competitive landscape.
