The word murky means obscure, vague, or unclear. That's a good adjective for the October jobs report published this morning. Here are some quick numbers for left-brained folks like our owner Chris L Yee. ⇔ Our economy added 12,000 jobs last month. That's the weakest monthly job gain since 243,000 jobs were lost in December 2020. ⇔ The expectation was for something like a 112,000 gain so that'd USUALLY be alarming, especially in light of last month's job gain of 223,000. ⇔ But this data reflects the impacts of Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton, and labor strikes at Boeing and Textron. ⇔ The Labor Dept had data collection issues as well. Their survey response rate was 47% last month versus their typical 65%. And the number of days they collected data was ten days last month versus their typical sixteen. ⇔ All that said, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1%. So.....what does this mean to you on this first day of November? For us, we are busy. In fact, we're arguably the most busy today as we've been all year! Let us know your thoughts!

Employment market turmoil created by recent hurricanes and significant labor strikes was expected to impact today’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) jobs data. While the BLS could not directly quantify storm and strike damage to the data, most analysts had estimated an impact of up to 100,000 jobs. With that as background, today’s data indicated employment essentially unchanged, increasing 12,000 versus September, significantly lower than the consensus estimate expansion of 100,000 and lower than the average monthly gain of 194,000 over the prior 12 months. “The U.S. electorate decision-making process is coming to a close, and we look for the experts’ final efforts at spinning today’s job results to favor their particular candidate throughout the next three or four days.
