I had the privilege of presenting at the Hospital Association of Southern California's Annual Meeting last week along with esteemed colleagues Stephanie Dorwart (CEO Altius) and Karen Zirkle and Joyce Volsch of Redlands Community Hospital. We discussed opportunities for hospitals to reimagine their workforce, educate and mentor managers, cross train, utilize AI and other automated platforms and lower costs. One of the main themes of the event was that supplemental funding from the federal government and states, particularly California with its huge budget deficit, will be limited at best. It will be more imperative than ever for hospitals to operate more efficiently in order to remain financially viable. Zephyr is helping hospitals to identify strategies to improve margin by driving incremental volume, improving revenue cycle functions, reimagining the workforce model and reducing non-labor expenses across multiple domains. Please reach out if you would like to discuss further.

The State of California continues to put the viability of its hospitals at risk with unfunded mandates (e.g. nurse staffing ratios, seismic retrofit) as it imposes a mandatory minimum wage law for health care entities. While this will benefit workers, hospitals will struggle to figure out how to absorb the substantial incremental cost. Senior leadership needs to look at new models of efficiency and savings including non-labor areas to offset this new cost. We are partnering with hospitals to change the paradigm and adapt.
