Women struggling with substance use disorder aren’t getting the care they need…..not because they need it less, but because the system wasn’t built for them. “More women suffer from substance use but don’t go to, or continue with, treatment. They’re seen as caregivers. They don’t have the proper support, and the system often prevents them from succeeding.” – Allyssa Bertram LCPC CADC, a licensed clinical professional counselor and certified alcohol and drug counselor at Carrum Health. The National Institute on Drug Abuse confirms what we see every day: many women avoid or drop out of treatment because they fear losing custody of their children or can’t step away from family responsibilities. Even attending one therapy session a week can feel impossible, let alone a month-long inpatient program. Stigma, lack of support, and systemic barriers make recovery even harder. At Carrum Health, Allyssa and our Substance Use Care Navigation Team are breaking down these barriers, ensuring women get the support they deserve without having to choose between their health and their families. This Women’s History Month, we honor the strength of women in recovery and the advocates fighting to reimagine their care. 💜 If you or someone you know needs support, help is here. #WomensHistoryMonth #SubstanceUseRecovery #WomenInRecovery #CarrumHealth #BreakingBarriers #SupportWomen

Will your insurance cover Ozempic? The answer might surprise you. “Medicare, for example, does not typically cover it except for very specific diagnoses, such as a history of heart attacks or strokes. Medicaid doesn't cover it. Private insurance coverage varies and is rather sporadic and confusing,” explains Rami Lutfi, M.D, Medical Director for Bariatric and General Surgery at Carrum Health, in this must-read Parade article. A huge thank you to Emily Laurence for breaking down an often-overlooked reality: navigating insurance coverage for Ozempic, Wegovy, and other in demand GLP-1 medications can be frustratingly complex, ranging from $0 (with the right coverage) to over $1,000 out of pocket. Dr. Lutfi emphasizes why understanding formularies, manufacturer discounts, and the risks of compounded alternatives is essential for those considering these medications. We were thrilled to see Tia Griffin, one of our patient care specialists, receive some extra flowers (or maybe french fries and frosties!) from one of our members last week. Our members are at the center of everything we do, so we want to ensure they have an exceptional experience when getting high-quality specialty care through Carrum. We couldn't do this without our amazing care team. 🧡 #patientexperience #CarrumHealth #memberexperience

Caregiving is often called a labor of love, but for many women, it’s also an invisible weight. Kathy Lee Kim, Director of Engagement Marketing at Carrum Health, knows this firsthand. Years ago, when her father was diagnosed with cancer, she suddenly found herself navigating appointments, treatments, financial concerns, and transportation, all while working full-time and caring for her own family. “This was before I came to Carrum, I didn’t have access to the kind of support Carrum offers. I had no idea about FMLA. I was juggling everything alone. As women, we take on these responsibilities instinctively, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have help.” Kathy’s father recovered from cancer, but years later, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The caregiving didn’t stop, it just changed. “We’re labeled just as caregivers, but we’re also managing homes, careers. We’re so incredibly resilient. The compassion, patience, and willingness we bring to our families is unmatched.” At Carrum, we believe no one should navigate serious illness alone. Kathy’s story is a testament to why we do what we do: helping patients and their families access the resources they need. Many folks aren't aware of the full range of workforce benefits or how to effectively use them. Our team is dedicated to educating and creating awareness, ensuring our members can fully leverage their benefits to their greatest potential. This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the strength of all women caregivers, the unsung heroes.
