Is Distributed Tracing worth the effort? In today's microservices environments, we need the request-centric view of distributed tracing so we can track a request as it flows through 10s of services. However, there are several challenges with Distributed Tracing- 1. Implementing it is hard! (typically a code change in each service) 2. Needs stringent sampling to control costs (typically 0.1% to 2% sampling) 3. But sampling reduces value from tracing! (devs. can't find the traces they need to troubleshoot an issue) So distributed tracing has been stuck in this high-effort, high-pain, low-value for a while. So what changes now? Emerging models with intelligent sampling and no-code-change deployments promise to unlock the original promise of tracing.
