Haha. Yeah, those entry level SEO people who obsess about every outgoing link and when in doubt add nofollow to all of them LOL. Reminds me of the good old days of "PageRank sculpting" when SEOs were so afraid of linking out that they would hoard PageRank by adding nofollow even to internal links until Google announced that using nofollow only resulted in PageRank evaporating. If you're too stingy to link out you are not part of the Web. Your site is a dead end.

I feel he was more specifically referring to the post he was answering which is about outbound links, which if not pushing paid content is not an issue, and despite the many articles on it does not add or detract from your site value to Google if you link out or if you link out to "bad sites" as long as you are not manipulating the link graph. So not all links -- though I am sure Google would love us to forget about them LOL [Original Tweet Barry has in the article] Here for ease of discussion. "@JohnMu its heard on internet that link juice is lost by giving outbound links, on the other hand, if websites are given good outbound links for reference, then the trustworthiness of article increases. These 2 are contradictory. For me both are necessary, what should be done?"

I call it link equity - irrespective of what Google says - anyone who's been in the SEO industry knows to take things like this with a big pinch of salt. I'm sat rocking EMD's, testing white text on white backgrounds, auditing sites with atrocious links and PBNS - you name it - what works works, what doesn't doesn't. Whilst the term link juice is tacky - the point of it still rings true. URL weighting by position (historically represented by pagerank) - still remains a thing.

Frankly, no one should use that term. Links and their purpose aside, it’s the worst phrase ever. 🤢🤣

Google or no google. We all know the value of links and how they impact our website. I always consider links as doors or people. If a person has more clout (traffic/followership) a link or a vote from them is BETTER for me than others that don't have the same clout. This is WOM marketing in its simplest form but digital. That's how Google or any other search engine works. So in a way John Mu is right. Create content for people. Create links for people. That is it. That's how I am helping enterprises win at their games and get better customers as well. Although this approach doesn't always bring a heap loads of traffic, it does help get QUALITY.
