    Industrial Palimpsest: Mango Vinyl Hub

    The proposal for the adaptive re-use of an old tin foil factory in the town of Cesis, Latvia was driven by two concepts.

    The first concept was an anti-tabula rasa approach, the architectural palimpsest acknowledges the industrial nature of the existing building and larger site context, while layering on a contemporary language which shows deference to the past while creating a new identity to the development.
    The second concept was inspired by the typological studies of German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher. Their analysis of industrial structural typologies throughout Europe led them to catalog the ubiquitous languages associated with common structures such as the water tower, the grain elevator or winding towers.
