2024 Summer Marching Band Camp Perry: Part-Time Auxiliary Coach

The Summer Marching Band Auxiliary Coach or Sectional Instrumental Instructor aids in the instruction of students during marching band pre-band camp and band camp in preparation for the marching band season. Additionally, this position may work with the marching band during the school year. The Auxiliary Coach or Instrumental Sectional Instructor will serve as part of a team, to assist the Band Director, and Assistant Band Director in the areas of preparation, instruction during rehearsals, and chaperoning of the auxiliary unit (i.e. the color guard, majorettes, drill team, dance team, etc.) at pre-band camp and band camp. The instrumental sectional instructor will provide small-group lessons and lead occasional sectionals.

Below is a breakdown of how the total compensation is allotted:

The selected candidate shall be compensated 15 hours at the workshop rate ($23.32/hr) for pre-band camp or post band camp and up to 35 hours at the workshop rate ($23.32/hr) for band camp.

Qualifications

Candidates must be enthusiastic about the fundamental goal of advancing student achievement in an urban public school district. In addition, we are seeking candidates with:

  • Experience with marching band sectional instruction or auxiliary performance/coaching required.
  • For Auxiliary Coach: Experience in the skills in at least one of the various sub groups of an auxiliary unit (e.g. the color guard, majorettes, drill team, dance team, etc.) required. Experience choreographing routines for the various auxiliary unit is required; or
  • For Instrumental Sectional Instructor: Music education or performance required (e.g. woodwinds, brass and/or percussion). Must be able to support ongoing ensemble (or sectional) instruction through technical development.
  • Experience and familiarity with the academic, socio-emotional, and cultural needs of urban students and have demonstrated success in working with these students and their parents.
  • Operates with a high level of personal responsibility and optimism

Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities of a 2024 Summer Marching Band: Auxiliary Coach/Instrumental Instructor include, but are not limited to:

  • Choreograph, arrange, and implement auxiliary routine(s), both as an integrated part of the marching band, and as an independent unit during summer practices and camp.
  • Conducts sectional/ensemble rehearsals for the unit, in addition to the scheduled marching band rehearsals, during the summer months in preparation for the football season, parades, and other community events.
  • Assist in securing all necessary equipment and materials for camp (i.e. flag poles, flags, batons, instruments, etc.).
  • Chaperone, provide and assume responsibility for the supervision of students during rehearsal, breaks, downtime during pre- band camp and band camp, and performances both on and off campus.
  • Establish a rapport and communicate with parents of the auxiliary students and band students and help organize their efforts in support of the unit.
  • Instruct students in the proper care and maintenance of uniforms and equipment.
  • Be visible in the community and participate in community events.
  • Assist with the annual All-City Marching Band Festival and local festivals.
  • Secure permission slips from all band members for participation in in all off-campus events.
  • Enforce guidelines/rules of conduct for governing students' behavior for on and off-campus events.
  • Adhere to the direction from the Marching Band Director and Assistant Director.

Staff Absence Policy:?

Staff are expected to be present for their entire work schedule during the duration of the Summer Marching Band Program.

Sick Leave will be awarded to PFT represented employees based on Article 144, Section 6a2 and 6b of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teacher's (PFT) Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Any additional absences during the work schedule will be docked from the staff's pay. If any staff is absent more than 2 days, the staff may be removed from their position and will only be paid for the days worked.
