Overview and Responsibilities:

CBS News Philadelphia has an immediate opening for an effective and efficient Assignment Editor with a proven record of multitasking. The individual is a highly competitive news professional with a passion for accuracy, breaking news, and proactive coverage of events that touch the lives of our audience. This individual’s demeanor is geared towards a “get it done point of view” while maintaining the utmost integrity. Familiarity with the Philadelphia area is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily newsroom assignments, monitor phones, coordinate logistics, and monitor social media.
  • Monitor police/fire scanners for breaking news, write breaking news alerts for digital.
  • Meet deadlines in high-stress breaking news situations while logistically dispatching crews efficiently.
  • Dispatch crews to stories and breaking news, using appropriate logistical and journalistic judgment.
  • Assist in finding stories with an emphasis on our key brand points and tracking stories as they develop
  • Handle time and logistics to make sure they are covered efficiently with available staff.
  • Generate original stories and develop follow-ups, track social media for news gathering, update information in assignment desk I-news daybook, maintain contact lists, and story files, ingest and record feeds as required.
  • Develop new contacts with government agencies (city, state, federal), and public relations representatives.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with our reporters and photographers, become a bridge of trust between newsroom personnel and those who work on the street.
  • Write breaking news articles and push alerts for digital platforms
  • Shift requires overnights and weekends!

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of proven television news assignment editor experience is strongly preferred, however, a significant background in print reporting or radio news will be considered.
  • Must have newsroom experience.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task a must.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Work efficiently and optimally with newsroom personnel and the public.
  • Broadcast Journalism degree preferred.
