Position Summary

Teaching Matters is seeking to address the reading gap nationally, and most especially in NYC and New Jersey. This position is responsible to design, implement, and lead several key programs and initiatives. As an Associate Director of Programs (ADP), this position will work closely with and report to the Senior Director of Programs, acting as a key leadership role in the design, pitch, and execution of programs that truly move the needle for students and children.

Roles And Responsibilities

Program Design and Improvement

  • Design and produce content aligned with the divisional theory of action.
  • Work collaboratively with a team to design and disseminate content to coaches, teachers, and school leaders, including the LMS and print materials under the direction of the VP and DP and other team members as needed.
  • Manage the development of all workshops and communication materials for programs.
  • Develop materials identified by SDP and/or VP as needed.
  • Revise programmatic materials based on learnings from implementation, leading the design of revision process and continuous improvement cycles.
  • Lead the collection of data and reporting of outcomes.
  • Articulate in meetings and stakeholder conversations the purpose, scope, and needs of programs, acting as the main promoter of the work needed (such as with district leaders, funders both private and foundation-based, etc.).
  • Work effectively with and manage outside content consultants and writers as needed to conceptualize, create, revise, and produce content.
  • Ensure that programs meet the needs of all students and content align to best practices of CRSE, SPED, and ELL pedagogies and frameworks.

Program Management and Implementation

  • In direction and coordination of Senior Director of Programs, manage a portfolio of programs, ensuring strong implementation and meeting of goals.
  • Manage a team of consultants and coaches, and alongside the Senior Director of Programs, manage resources and finances sustainably and responsibly.
  • Directly manage the key stakeholder relationships of associated program portfolio, ensuring implementation reaches associated goals and objectives.
  • Manage and implement direct assignments.

System-level design

  • Lead the identification, development and integration of systemic solutions that support student reading proficiency and optimize the effectiveness of such programs.
  • Systematize programmatic design elements into larger program offerings.
  • Manage resources effectively in conjunction with managers.
  • Pilot and develop enhanced program models that incorporate data tools and LMS offerings to support scalability.
  • Perform in depth user experience analyses to improve program offerings.

Literacy Content Expertise

  • Evaluate program and tool success by monitoring student reading proficiency through assessments.
  • Support teachers and teacher leaders in implementing structured literacy approach through the adoption of high leverage pedagogical practices.
  • Support the adoption of new and effective literacy practices into the divisional programs.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to design and pilot the online data and reporting platform to effectively support school-wide improvements in reading proficiency.

Develops systems for accumulating and analyzing relevant data, ensuring decisions regarding projects are informed by data insights. Skilled in codifying, documenting, and sharing approaches, learnings, systems, and processes with the team.
  • Relationship Building & Communications: Excels in establishing and nurturing stakeholder relationship, ensuring open lines of communication and alignment on goals. Communicates with relevant stakeholders, ensuring client or project work is effectively presented, effectively advocating for ideas, and effectively conveying impact of work.. Cultivates a culture of transparency and consistent feedback with relevant stakeholders.
  • Instructional Content Mastery: Demonstrates expertise in the development and implementation of instructional programs (early childhood education, english language arts, and/or mathematics) in varied grade levels. Leverages and tailors pedagogical theories, curriculum development, and evidence-based practices to inform strategies and interventions to address specific challenges for clients.
  • Instructional Coaching: Demonstrates expertise in guiding and nurturing the growth of instructional staff through targeted professional development, constructive mentoring, and actionable feedback. Leverages effective teaching practices, adult learning theories, and instructional design principles to foster a culture of continuous improvement among instructional staff.

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7-10 years instructional and leadership experience in the field of early literacy education, with specific evidence of success in grade K-5 reading. Pre-K experience is a plus.
  • Successful track record leading system-level change in schools resulting in better educational decision making related to early reading proficiency.
  • Proven success in designing and/or implementing response to intervention systems in elementary schools.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the current research base in k - 3 reading instruction
  • High level of professionalism and ability to work effectively with a variety of team members within Teaching Matters, outside stakeholders, and across schools.
  • Deep commitment to Teaching Matters’ mission, vision, and core values, including a commitment to equitably improving outcomes for all students.
  • Bachelor and Master’s Degrees required.

Perks And Compensation

  • This position works 12 months and is a full-time position, funding dependent and permitting.
  • Salary range: $112,339 -$121,448 per year, based on experience. Starting salaries are based on metrics that are non negotiable to ensure equitable practices. See our compensation philosophy here.

  • Teaching Matters is unable to hire any employees of the New York City Department of Education within one year of the end of their employment.
