Henry Street is profoundly grateful to U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman (NY-10), who announced yesterday a generous funding appropriation to renovate our agency’s historic building at 281 East Broadway into a multigenerational community center. As we’ve emerged from the pandemic years, the need in our community for youth and adult services including mental health support, education, recreation, and safety, and for greater mutual awareness and care, has remained consistent. Making space to serve these interlocking needs is at the core of Henry Street’s mission, and we look forward to serving our neighbors in this updated building.

Meet Siddig, one of more than 200,000 new migrants who have arrived in NYC in the past 18 months. Originally from Sudan, Siddig fled ethnic persecution and civil war, making a seven-month-long journey through 11 countries. Siddig learned of Henry Street’s free English classes from a friend at the Randall’s Island emergency tent shelter. Since then, he’s taken advantage of every opportunity the Settlement has presented him. Funding for essential support like food, transportation, and emergency housing for migrants is stretched thin, putting our new neighbors at continued risk. Henry Street’s Emily James spoke with WNYC Radio/Gothamist about a groundbreaking program to combat youth homelessness that the Settlement is administering with Point Source Youth. Through a combination of counseling to determine housing needs, cash assistance, and help in managing finances, this initiative helps young adults facing homelessness to secure stable housing. James, a community advocate, says the program “prioritizes trusting young people to know what they need — and in the process, we’ve learned a great deal about how to effectively meet the needs of young people at risk of becoming unhoused.” Click below to read the full article. #YouthHomelessness #CashAssistance #SelfDetermination

Nineteen graduates of the Building Automation Systems training showed off their newly developed skills before a range of potential employers on Friday, June 28, at Civic Hall. The three-year-strong building automation program is a collaboration of Stacks+Joules, which provides the training, and Henry Street, which provides social support to reduce barriers to success and helps participants find jobs in the field. Reflecting our mutual goal of connecting young adults from underserved communities to the traditionally white, male-dominated clean energy industry, 14 of the trainees were a diverse group of young adults ages 18 to 24—more than half of whom have already been hired or accepted into internships.   As these grads venture into the workforce, they will help to meet the demands of developing a sustainable, green economy while gaining self-sufficiency and opportunities for career advancement. Existing employers and potential employers who attended the graduation and skills presentation included representatives from TEC Building Systems, LLC, Autodesk, NYC Department of Small Business Services, Climatec, LLC, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Rees, NYC Employment and Training Coalition (NYCETC), Willdan, PLASTARC, Inc., JPMorganChase, NYC Ferry, NYC Mayor's Office, Steven Winter Associates, and Controls NYC. Henry Street’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is a vibrant community of both newly arrived and longtime New Yorkers, all united by their goal to improve their English skills. Students are from all over the world, from countries like Venezuela, China, Sudan, and Ukraine, with many being asylum seekers. Our ESOL classes offer more than just language practice—they provide an opportunity to make new friends! Recently, students visited the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and especially enjoyed the greenhouses, where many recognized plants from their home countries. 🌺 The next session of beginner and intermediate ESOL classes starts at the end of August.
