Associate Director, Scientific Affairs

The primary purpose of the Associate Director, Scientific Affairs, is to provide oversight for and ensure execution of all scientific aspects of the research environment for the CSO. Provide scientific and technical expertise to prioritize and deliver scientific information and strategies to enhance the visibility and reputation of the CSO. Assist in the development of scientific planning and oversight for the research projects, and scientific communication in the form of manuscripts and presentations and reports to funding agencies; and develop relationships with other departments and institutions engaged with the projects to realize deliverable and achieve milestones.

Science Administration - CSO Office

  • Manage the scientific administration of the CSO office
  • Participate in and contributes to projects and initiatives that increase the value, reputation, visibility, and productivity of the CSO
  • Maintain knowledge of scientific programs and priorities of the CSO office
  • Cultivate and maintain long-term peer-to-peer relationships with influential members of the scientific community, including scientific subject matter experts (internal and external), journal editors, foundation and corporate partners offices, and others as relevant.
  • Coordinate and assure implementation of appropriate strategies to disseminate prioritized scientific content in collaboration with strategic communications and external affairs; assure accurate scientific interpretation and messaging; serve as primary reviewer for communications materials prepared on behalf of the CSO.
  • Develops digital content with CSO and posts to social media accounts.
  • Participate in scientific meetings with leaders and faculty members
  • Review and provide feedback on data published/generated internally or externally and provides scientific input for the research projects involved.
  • Communicate project results in the form of written reports and presentations to funding agencies, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with and advise colleagues and external partners to solve/resolve problems within the framework of related studies/projects.
  • Establish and maintains funding partnerships via letters, progress reports, and other mechanisms.
  • Review data and oversee revision of scientific manuscripts prior to submission.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of symposia, site visits, external review committees and other important scientific events.
  • Oversee and manage philanthropic reporting, ensuring compliance and efficient communications, both scientific and lay.
  • Ensure that strategic, tactical, and funding plans for research projects are developed and executed efficiently.

Laboratory Research Management Functions: Maintain knowledge of CSO research objectives and priorities for academic laboratory. Direct all aspects of the research environment including SOP development, personnel management, collaborative grant submissions, budgets & contracts.

Fundraising

  • Read relevant literature to develop background and strategy pieces for grants
  • Determine appropriate grant funding for on-going projects in lab
  • Proactively seek out and coordinates application for all appropriate NIH, CPRIT, and foundation funding to support CSO
  • Collaborates in the writing, planning, and execution of research grants.
  • Prepare scientific portions of grant applications
  • Coordinates scientific portion of grant applications (research summary, abstract, lay abstract, specific aims, significance, innovation, etc.
  • Develop draft grant budgets and justifications
  • Prepare ancillary scientific documents for grant submissions (animal welfare, human subjects, resources, equipment, etc.).
  • Monitor applications for financial and personnel overlap; make suggestions to refine objectives to avoid overlap and increase funding opportunities.
  • Contact funding agencies to discuss eligibility/applicability of projects
  • Liaise with grant administrator, ORA, CPRIT office, etc. to ensure internal MDACC requirements are met for applications
  • Liaise with collaborators - internal and external - for multi-investigator grants
  • Draft and submit grant progress reports
  • Monitor progress of grants toward committed aims
  • Direct the post-award funds and fund allocation across multiple grants
  • Consult on scope of grant proposal regarding funding levels

Education

Required: Master's degree in one of the life sciences.

Preferred: PhD in one of the life sciences.

Experience

Required: Six years of relevant experience in research, scientific communications, or scientific affairs, to include two years in a supervisory/managerial capacity. With preferred doctorate degree, four years of required experience, to include two years in a supervisory/managerial capacity. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

Preferred: Experience with scientific writing, grants, publications, understanding research in lab, managing large research projects.
