The Science & Mission Scheduling Branch (SMSB) in the Science Operations and Engineering (SCOPE) Division is seeking a Science Operations Scientist to support science scheduling operations for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and the Roman Space Telescope (Roman).

No prior practical experience is required; prior experience or course work associated with space science mission development, scheduling, orbital dynamics, and instrumentation is beneficial.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Astronomy or Mathematics is required. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or discipline with prior science planning and scheduling experience may also be considered.
  • Basic knowledge of physics, astronomy, and orbital mechanics concepts is required.
  • Knowledge of UNIX or LINUX operating systems is required.
  • Working knowledge of Python or a similar scripting language and SQL is desired.


Qualified applicants will also have:

  • Ability to work independently and carry through assigned tasks.
  • Ability to formulate and resolve problems through research and application of standard scientific, mathematical and computation skills and techniques.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to write detailed operational procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to include technical writing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and follow-through are essential.
  • Ability to work in and actively contribute to a team environment.


This position requires occasional shift work in support of current and future missions.
