Behavioral Health Counselor/Trainer

Job Summary: The Behavioral Health Counselor/Trainer provides culturally competent behavioral health services, including individual short-term counseling/therapy and case management services, and as needed, conducts crisis intervention and collateral meetings to remove behavioral health barriers to work participation and employment.

Primary Responsibilities Include

  • Conduct intakes and comprehensive initial risk assessments of clients, including a clinical analysis of the history and current status in relation to bio-psycho-social-cultural, risk factors, substance use/abuse/dependence, vocational experience, SSI assessments & eligibility, family issues and other information.
  • Facilitate/conduct group counseling/therapy sessions utilizing various modalities; process-oriented, curriculum-based, and/or psycho-educational, with various topics such as symptom management, stress management, relationship management, wellness recovery, parenting skills, and skills building
  • Provide psycho-educational groups, didactic & classroom trainings, and services to promote the acquisition of soft skills, facilitating the client’s employability and success in a work environment; provide one-on-one individual sessions, as needed
  • Refer and transition clients to the appropriate services and departments, as-needed based on clients’ needs and conditions
  • Participate in and facilitate various client outreach activities to further support intensive engagement and retention in CalWORKs program services
  • Collaborate in roundtable sessions and closely coordinate with treatment team members, HSA staff, and other care/community providers, as well as the client, in the planning of the individual’s treatment & care, goal development and progress, vocational assessment & rehabilitation, case conferencing, participant progress and improvement, discharge planning, and other services as indicated
  • Provide consultation to HSA vocational staff and employment specialists concerning behavioral health related problems and care, including assessment of barriers to employment, soft skills acquisition counseling, employment, and training issues for CalWORKs recipients, as requested and needed
  • Provide frequent (weekly, monthly, or as agreed-upon) on-going contact with HSA service providers regarding client needs & progress, in order to monitor and determine effectiveness of service provision
  • Develop and maintain clear, open, timely, cooperative, and diplomatic communications and working relations with all staff, consumers, and partner agencies
  • Complete and maintain timely administrative and treatment records and documentation related to client care, in accordance to standards specified by RAMS policies, clinical standards, and oversight agencies (e.g. HSA, CalWORKs, etc.)
  • Participate in and facilitate various educational & training workshops relating to behavioral health issues, technical support/training, and psycho-educational topics for clients, HSA program staff, other professionals, and/or the community-at-large, as deemed necessary
  • Participate in case conferences, treatment team and staff meetings, in-service trainings and other staff development activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • MA/MS in Psychology, MFT, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, or related fields from an accredited institution
  • BBS license or registration (i.e. LMFT/LCSW or AMFT/ASW)) highly preferred.
  • Two years of experience providing community-based behavioral health services to indigent, underserved populations of adults with serious mental health and substance use problems and their families.
  • Significant experience in settings similar to the SF Dept. of Human Services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various treatment modalities, including short-term counseling/therapy strategies, group therapy processes & approaches, and wellness recovery principles in working with clients who have mental health & substance abuse, or co-occurring substance use problems, and parenting issues.
  • Knowledge of, and experience working with, substance abuse/dependence issues, stages of recovery, harm reduction model, and motivational treatment; provide counseling, assessment, and utilize crisis intervention strategies.
  • Familiarity with vocational rehabilitation models of practice and counseling strategies, highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging target population, engaging participants in small and large group activities, and conducting psychoeducational workshops.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct clinical assessments of clients with behavioral health and physical complaints, highly preferred.

Other Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with community behavioral health systems of care in San Francisco, including the philosophy of care, levels of care for clinical services, and the delivery of such services, highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with the San Francisco community resources/services (may include health, mental health, substance abuse, vocational, housing, family support and resources, etc.), highly preferred.
  • Strong commitment to the philosophy, goals, & mission of RAMS in providing community-based, culturally competent, and consumer-guided mental health services to the community.
  • Commitment to engaging in professional development activities such as trainings, continuing education seminars, case conferences, and reviewing up-to-date material, etc., as related to treatment strategies for the population of HSA.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively, function independently, and interact professionally with a diverse, multi-cultural, and interdisciplinary staff of all levels.
  • Applicants with ability to provide bilingual & culturally competent services in Cantonese, Tagalog, Russian, Vietnamese, or Spanish, PREFERRED, in order to meet the needs of populations served.
