Department Of Population Health Sciences (DPHS)

Population health explores the social factors that influence health, and population health scientists work to improve populations by using research and data to: reduce disparities, implement effective health innovations, measure true health needs, and link communities and healthcare systems. We offer remote or hybrid working options and a casual office environment in a newly remodeled historic building in Downtown Durham, NC.

General Description

This position will help facilitate the day-to-day collection and analysis of qualitative data for multiple research studies run out of the School of Medicine (SOM) and facilitated by Department of Population Health Sciences' (DPHS) qualitative research core. This position will work with multiple DPHS faculty and investigators across the SOM to implement the research projects. Research projects generally focus on patient/participant and other stakeholder preferences for and experiences with clinical care and research, biomedical HIV prevention, concept elicitation for development of patient reported outcomes, empirical bioethics (e.g., informed consent), and health disparities.

Data collection and management (35%):

The Position Will Carry Out Qualitative Data Collection Activities, Including Conducting Focus Groups And Interviews With Patient Participants And Other Key Informants. This Position Will Also

  • conduct and synthesize literature reviews;
  • interface with study participants in order to collect research data;
  • design electronic and paper data collection forms to capture data according to protocols;
  • follow the required processes, policies, and systems to ensure data security, including but not limited to recognizing and reporting vulnerabilities related to security of physical and electronic data;
  • prepare materials for team meetings. This position will be expected to follow SOPs for data quality assurance (QA) and actively monitor QA of study data.

Data analysis (35%):

The position will collaborate with a team of qualitative analysts to:

  • code transcripts and notes;
  • identify themes and other notable data points as they relate to research questions;
  • run queries and reports which will be used to inform the summary of study findings, as well as in investigating incomplete, inaccurate or missing data to ensure accuracy and completeness of data;
  • interpret and summarize study findings.

Study operations (20%):

Responsibilities

The position will be responsible for consenting, screening, and scheduling interview participants, and maintaining participant-level documentation for all studies in accordance with current policies and guidance related to participant recruitment. In addition, this position will assist:

  • with procedures and documentation of participant study payments in a timely fashion;
  • in the implementation of innovative solutions to maximize recruitment and retention;
  • in the creation of SOPs, and the implementation of other operational plans;
  • in the development of Duke University Health System IRB documents such as consent forms, protocols, and continuing reviews.

Ethics (10%):

This position will be expected to communicate to research participants, both orally and written, regarding research activities in all study documents and research participant communications. Also, the position will stay abreast of the ethical conduct of research, and the specific safeguards to ensure ethical conduct and protect vulnerable populations. Assist others with application of these principles. Assist with the development of Conflict of Interest (COI)/Data Safety Monitoring Plans (DSMPs)/ Duke Research Data Lifecycle (DRDL) plans. The position will be expected to identify and explain the risk and benefits to a participant as they pertain to the research study being conducted, as well as maintain Duke and project specific training requirements.

Skills

Preferred Qualifications at this Level

  • Can easily use computing software and web-based applications (e.g., Microsoft Office products, EndNote, Zotero)
  • Skills in NVivo and/or other qualitative data analysis software, and online survey tools such as RedCap and/or Qualtrics preferred.

Special Skills

Preferred candidates will possess experience working on qualitative research studies; specifically, experience with qualitative data collection (e.g., in-depth interviews and focus group discussions) and analysis methods (e.g., content and thematic analysis); experience using a qualitative analysis software package is not required but preferred; experience conducting systematic literature reviews; experience with survey design is not required but preferred; ability to write and speak clearly in a variety of settings and styles to convey messages and ideas effectively; and the ability to work with diverse populations from a variety of settings.

All projects require team-based work that lends itself to extensive collaboration; in-person meetings facilitate this type of collaboration more readily. The position must be able to work regularly at the downtown Durham (NC) office. This is not a 100% remote position.

NOTE: This position is 100% sponsored research and is a term position (once funding ends the position ends unless there is continued funding).

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Completion of an Associate's degree

Experience

Work requires a minimum of two years of relevant research experience. A Bachelor's degree may substitute for 2 years required experience.
