Making Waves Education Foundation is a private operating foundation located in Richmond, California. With a unique focus on college attendance and graduation, Making Waves Education Foundation has supported historically underrepresented and underserved students in pursuing their dreams for more than 30 years. The foundation supports Making Waves Academy, a public charter school in Richmond, California, educating more than 1,100 students, and leads a college success program, which provides coaching, scholarships, financial and career support for more than 400 college students as well as a network for more than 700 Wave-Maker alumni. Our unique, holistic educational model supports students academically, socially, emotionally, and financially on their journey to, through, and beyond college.

About The College Success Coach Role

The College Success Coach plays a vital role in enhancing student success and fostering continuous improvement with a focus on driving student outcomes by consistently applying the coaching team frameworks (Wave-Maker Success and GRADDS). This position involves managing a caseload of approximately 75-85 Wave-Makers.

College Success Coaches will:

  • Coach Wave-Makers to achieve academic and career success, utilizing a mindset focused on building trust and authentic relationships, while empowering student agency and maintaining high expectations
  • Use data-driven insights to inform coaching strategies and interventions
  • Implement programmatic interventions including education planning, pace-to-degree reviews, and career preparation
  • Collaborate with Wave-Makers on goal setting using the student self-assessments
  • Within 6-12 months in the role, a successful candidate will have met with and established a partnership with their caseload of students, effectively implementing the Wave-Maker Success Framework. The College Success Coach will have collaborated with their manager to set and make progress toward individual personal and professional goals.

  • A competitive base salary range of $77,682-$105,099 based on requisite work experience and performance during the interview process. We intend to hire a candidate who fully meets or exceeds the qualifications for this role.
  • In line with our commitment to equity, fairness, and transparency, we do not negotiate salaries.
  • Up to 51 total days off per fiscal year (a combination of company-paid holidays, vacation, sick, and personal time)
  • 100% employer paid medical (Kaiser HMO Platinum), vision, and dental benefits for the full-time staff member and a spouse/domestic partner or dependent child(ren).
  • Occasional paid staff lunches and free access to Grubhub+, 3% retirement match, a $750 HSA account to help fund mental health benefits, FSA for medical and childcare expenses, and an annual professional development stipend
  • A hybrid work environment where you will work from the office at least once a week on Thursdays and at least 4 additional in-person days to attend quarterly team retreats, with flexibility to work remotely otherwise. Additionally, this role will occasionally travel to meet Wave-Makers at their campuses. We provide a monthly wi-fi reimbursement to successfully work remotely.

Responsibilities

The College Success Coach's Primary Responsibilities include:

Coaching and Supporting Wave-Makers:

  • Drive programmatic student outcomes, ensuring Wave-Makers persist, achieve timely degrees, and gain career experience
  • Build trust and authentic relationships, focusing on student agency and maintaining high expectations
  • Maintain consistent communication with assigned students to provide ongoing support, facilitating conversations that foster academic, personal, and professional growth. This includes assisting Wave-Makers in overcoming social, emotional, and academic challenges, while enhancing their skills in agency, self-advocacy, communication, organization, and time management
  • Develop individual coaching plans to deliver personalized, motivating, and actionable guidance consistent with Making Waves Education Foundation's coaching framework
  • Support students in developing career plans that aid their pursuit of internships and post-graduate employment, including resume building and enhancing interview skills.
  • Review education plans and transcripts each term and conduct pace-to-degree conversations with students to ensure they are on track for timely graduation
  • Continuously engage with GRADDS and stay active with best practices in coaching 
  • Provide guidance on college life, connecting Wave-Makers with campus resources and helping them understand the commitments required for success
  • Utilize various methods, including 1:1 meetings, group sessions, and other collaborative approaches, to meet the unique needs of each caseload
  • Work collaboratively with Making Waves Education Foundation staff to ensure that Wave-Makers receive excellent coaching services

Data Collection/Management and Processing

  • Use data to inform coaching strategies by frequently utilizing Salesforce and PowerBi reports to measure progress against goals, identify trends, assess areas of caseload development, and inform Wave-Maker communication plans
  • Input and maintain detailed and accurate records in Making Waves' Salesforce database, including Wave-Maker communication, task completion, academic progress, graduation plans, career preparation, and manage
  • Process Wave-Maker scholarship petitions and intervention contracts in accordance with Making Waves policies and guidelines.
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding sensitive staff, Wave-Maker, and family information  
  • Continuously engage with and stay active with best practices in Salesforce.

Program and Organizational Support

  • Support the Coaching Department and Foundation team in moving forward organizational priorities  
  • Fosters a safe and supportive program by following organization policies  
  • Advance, lead, or develop Making Waves' programming in the following areas:
  • Academic, professional development, and other student-facing programming (e.g., workshops, events, and newsletters)
  • Complete projects and support team members as needed
  • Attend/staff Making Waves Education Foundation, and Making Waves Academy events as assigned
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as needed

Actively Engage in Continuous Improvement and Organization Processes

  • Engage in ongoing call evaluation process to identify areas of growth to utilize in regular coaching meetings
  • Professional Growth: Research, schedule, and participate in professional development opportunities in service of their professional growth and impact on the organization
  • Participate in organization-wide systems, processes, and rituals (e.g., annual and quarterly goal setting, employee engagement surveys, All Hands); commit to providing constructive feedback to improve our work in the future

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for Making Waves events, as needed
  • Occasional local travel required
  • Strong computer and database skills

What you have accomplished (required):

  • A bachelor's degree and work authorization required
  • 3-5 years of closely related work experience
  • Experience working at education, nonprofit, or social impact organizations
  • Demonstrated proficiency and/or growth potential in the Making Waves Education Foundation Mission & Core Values (drive impact, promote equity, build community, do hard things, learn and grow)
