We currently have an opening for Director of Engineering and R&D. This is a key position working closely with our CTO, that is recognized as a critical function for business success and will be responsible for leading the development and design of our analytical products. This role will also be supervising engineering and quality; prioritizing, organizing and monitoring workflow, and delegating tasks accordingly. This role will be based in Houston, TX and report to the Chief Technology Officer.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Leads a team of mechanical, electrical, software, and quality engineers with a hands-on involvement to develop sensors, analyzers, and software applications.
  • Partners with our CTO to lead the product roadmap for new technology and innovative ideas for a portion of our Industrial products.
  • Develops, deploys, monitors and measures R&D goals, objectives and internal design standards within all engineering subgroups with a focus on maintaining high quality manufacturing.
  • Overseeing product compliance per applicable industry standards (UL, ASTM, ATEX, CE, etc.)
  • Supports integration of ERP system (ideally Epicor) within the Engineering group to include an appropriate ECR / ECO (Engineering Change Requests / Orders) process.
  • Builds and manages systems for Engineering Change Management (ECM) / version and revision control through centralized documentation systems.
  • Partners with operations to assist in translating assembly drawings, BOM’s, build documents and, Design Verification Plans and Reports (DVP&R) into work instructions, assembly/test manuals and procurement plans.
  • Collaborates with sales, marketing, and service to develop solutions for product gaps and launch.
  • Develop and manage internal design reviews and participate in reviews with customers and key stakeholders.
  • Ensures final output of product designs are functional, cost-effective, and meets customer and industry requirements.
  • Manages and implements New Product Development (NPD)/VaVe project valuations and works with leadership team to prioritize innovation/NPD and sustaining projects.
  • Manages R&D budget and optimizes engineering staff resources to deliver projects on schedule.
  • Provides technical expertise on strategic initiatives.
  • Provides periodic market trend insights and the latest cutting-edge technologies, and reports to senior management any pertinent findings to ensure continued alignment with company goals.
  • Promotes good communication and engagement, and aligned shared objectives amongst internal and external teams to ensure customer expectations are met.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned from time to time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor‘s or Master’s degree in Engineering or equivalent.
  • PhD in a science discipline preferred.
  • 7+ years of professional experience designing and developing analytical instrumentation.
  • 5+ years of experience in a management leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with engineering principles and procedures that apply to sensors and systems designs.
  • Knowledge and in-depth understanding of VaVe, DVP&R, Sustaining engineering as well as principles and practices related to cost-take-out, commonization and modular designs.
  • Must possess in-depth understanding in one or more engineering fields (i.e. electrical, software, mechanical)
  • Familiarity with industry regulations and procedures to ensure safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance. Experience with design and certification for hazardous locations is a plus.
  • Proficiency in ANSI/ASME and ASTM standards
  • Experience with ISO 9001, and ideally ISO 17025
  • Relevant experience in several / all of the following:
  • Design for Manufacturing
  • Sensors and Analyzers
  • Stage-gate/Phase-gate processes and tools
  • New Product Development/Introductions (NPD / NPI)
  • SolidWorks or other PDM systems
  • Compliance, certification and instrument regulations
  • Root Cause Analysis Countermeasures
  • Ability to read, interpret and comprehend engineering prints / assembly drawings / BOM’s.
  • Experience with programming languages and software programs is a plus.
  • Must be able to take on complex and advanced engineering projects while balancing managerial responsibilities.
  • Extensive cross functional team (CFT) experience including technical and non-technical work.
  • Professionalism, with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven leadership skills and success managing a team.
  • Strong problem solving and time management skills, a results-oriented work ethic, and ability to work alone with limited direct supervision.
  • Willingness to assist with tasks, even when the work is out of the scope of responsibilities.
  • Fiscal and financial awareness is a must. Attention to cost and expense matters.
  • Customer-oriented, with the ability to represent the company and present engineering ideas and designs to non-technical audiences.
  • Must have core values, exceptional work ethic and the ability for continuous self-improvement.
  • Ability to attract and retain top engineering talent.
  • Ability to Travel 20-30%
