About The Role - Director Or People & Culture

We seek a dynamic, experienced, and entrepreneurial professional to lead Campus Compact’s efforts to enhance HR best practices and infuse equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout our collective people operations. The Director of People & Culture is responsible for developing a people strategy that ensures the staff is supported and well-positioned for success and for leading the development and implementation of our human resources strategy, policies, and practices to support the organization's mission and goals.

This role will steward the overall employee experience, recruiting, onboarding, developing, retaining, and engaging staff in meaningful and joyful ways. There are currently ~35 FTE on staff. This role reports to the Chief Strategy and Operations Officer, Matt Farley.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic HR Leadership
    • Lead organizational efforts to enhance Campus Compact's performance management and review process. Develop and implement strategies, programs, and guidelines for performance management across the organization, knowing that we are a fully remote organization
    • Design, organize, and deliver training programs and workshops that reinforce the organization's culture, values, and desired behaviors; including serving as a key lead in planning and development of all staff meetings and retreats
    • Work with managers to set clear performance expectations and goals for employees, providing coaching and support to help them succeed
    • Collaborate with leadership to align people strategies with overall organization goals. Provide strategic guidance on organizational structure, workforce planning, talent development, and HR budgeting
    • Implement core HR administration tasks, such as benefits administration, leave management, and maintaining accurate and up-to-date employee records
  • Employee Experience
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive onboarding program to integrate new employees into Campus Compact's culture. Ensure all staff have a consistent entry into the organization and access to the tools, resources, and information they need to be successful in their roles
    • Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional growth, encouraging employees to pursue opportunities for self-improvement and contribute to a positive organizational culture
    • Develop strategies to measure and assess organizational culture, including employee engagement surveys, focus groups, and other feedback mechanisms
    • Implement initiatives to foster a positive work environment, enhance employee morale, and promote a sense of belonging and commitment to the organization's culture
    • Responsible for conflict resolution and investigations, ensuring fair and timely outcomes while fostering a positive workplace; escalate complex issues to safeguard the organization
  • People Operations
    • Drive people management and recruitment efforts, focused on attracting, selecting, developing, and retaining employees.
    • Collaborate with hiring managers to identify staffing needs and create job descriptions that reflect both the role requirements and cultural fit
    • Champion Campus Compact's commitment to inclusive hiring, developing best-practice approaches to attracting talent, and ensuring a fair, equitable, and effective process
    • Build relationships with external partners to expand the organization's talent pipeline with individuals who share our commitment to our mission and values
What You'll Need:

  • 5+ years of relevant People/Talent/HR experience
  • The ability to shift seamlessly between strategic, big-picture thinking and operational, nuts-and-bolts systems building
  • A track record of embedding equity throughout HR practices, transforming organizations to be inclusive and just, and supporting teams with a rich mix of partners across race, gender, sexual orientation, and other group identities
  • A high capacity to manage one's own emotions and to identify the emotions of others in order to support staff; ability to facilitate challenging and courageous conversations
  • Experience designing and delivering training programs and development initiatives that reinforce organizational culture and values
  • Proven results coaching staff and building a team's performance capacity
  • Knowledge of and experience with employment-related laws and regulations and ability to successfully apply them as needed
  • Experience working in a remote environment is strongly preferred

Compensation & Location

Campus Compact provides a competitive benefits package, including national healthcare coverage, generous paid time off, and an employer retirement contribution of up to 8%. The hiring range for this position is an annual salary of $90,000-$100,000. The final salary within this range will be determined based on relevant experience.

This is a full-time, fully-remote position. Limited travel is expected; 3-4 times per year.

The overall evaluation process will look to follow this anticipated timeline:

  • Late August: Selected candidates asked to complete short answer questions
  • Early September: Zoom interview with Campus Compact Staff
  • Mid-September: Finalist candidates will be asked to complete a timed, paid, trial assignment
  • Late September: Finalists will participate in a multi-team member panel interview
  • Candidate references will also be checked at this step
    • Early October: Offer extended
  • October 21-23: There is a team retreat that we would like the selected candidate to attend in Grand Rapids, MI
