The Director of Residential Education serves as the senior housing officer and oversees all aspects of the Residential Education program including the strategic development, management, and evaluation of a housing program for 2,400 on-campus students that supports the mission of Student Success and The New School. The Director leads all aspects of residence education, budget management, and on-campus housing support. This position oversees all emergency planning, crisis response, student conduct, serves as a senior administrator on-call and responds to high-level student and facility-related emergencies. Additionally, this position oversees staff hiring, ongoing training and development, and performance management of 11 full-time and 100 student employees. This position directly supervises two Associate Directors, one Assistant Director and a Coordinator position. This is a full-time, 12-month, live-on (optional) position, serves in an on-call duty rotation for high-level crisis response and supports occasional weekend and evening events during the academic year and summer.

Responsibilities

Serves as a member of the Assistant Provost for Student Affairs and Assistant Dean leadership team and assists in the development, implementation, and assessment of Student Success’ mission and priorities.

  • Provides strategic vision and leadership for residential education , including the use of StarRez housing management system, housing policies, opening/closing, processes, hall operations.
  • Directs the strategic development, management, and assessment of the residential education program.
  • Directs the development and management of the department’s strategic marketing plan to promote the on-campus experience.
  • Oversees departmental financial operations, including budget development and management.
  • Provides direct supervision and on-going development opportunities for three full-time staff, in the areas of Student Behavior and Community Engagement.
  • Provide ongoing direction & feedback about performance through weekly 1:1 meetings and ongoing performance evaluations.
  • Provide intentional professional development opportunities and goal setting that contribute to increasing competency of job responsibilities.
  • Collaborates with Facilities Management and Housing Operations to oversee daily operations, mail services, master planning, and construction project planning.
  • Oversees residence education initiatives that promote and support student learning and development, academic success and retention, community engagement, leadership development, and social and cultural awareness through a curricular approach grounded in student development theory.
  • Administers the University’s Student Conduct Code for on-campus students, community living standards, conflict resolution efforts, and the student conduct process.
  • Supports the department’s student leadership and self-governance opportunities, including the Residence Hall Association (RHA), and community councils.
  • Oversees departmental policies, procedures, and protocols, including risk management, emergency preparedness, and crisis response, while serving as a senior administrator on-call responding to high-level student and facility-related emergencies.
  • Supervises all human resources related processes for the department, including hiring, training and development, and performance management of 10 full-time and 100 student employees.
  • Maintains effective partnerships with key departments including, but not limited to, Facilities Management, Campus Safety, Dining Services, Student Health Services, Student Support and Crisis Response, Title IX Coordinator, University General Counsel, and Human Resources.
  • Serves as a senior administrator on-call and responds to high-level student and facility-related emergencies ; residence halls are open 365 days a year and therefore being on-call during holidays should be expected; in cases of high level crisis this role is expected to be in-person and actively leading efforts.
  • Maintain contact with parents and other constituencies as appropriate.
  • Participates in university-wide events, including Recruitment Events, Open Houses, Accepted Student Days, residence hall openings, Orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, and Commencement.
  • Serves on divisional and university committees and leads projects as required.
  • Serves as a referral resource for faculty, staff, students, and parents.
  • Represents The New School at summer and academic year housing recruitment events as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA Degree and seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressive experience in higher education, business administration, educational leadership, counseling, or a closely related field.
  • Required to live on campus housing for the duration of employment. Ability to work full-time, 12-month, live -on position, serving in an on-call duty rotation for high-level crisis response and supports occasional weekend and evening events during the academic year and summer.
  • Experience working in a housing system that contains occupancy managing, assignments and billing, budget management, facilities planning, and residence life/education.
  • Demonstrated strong fiscal management skills.
  • Experience with emergency planning and managing crisis-related situations.
  • Experience overseeing and managing staff hiring, development, and performance management.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, developing, motivating a diverse staff team, while directly supervising mid to senior-level professional staff.
  • Experience building collaborative partnerships with faculty, administrators, students, parents/families, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of a diverse community.
  • Ability to manage multiple collaborative projects and systems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Applied understanding of student development theory, including the impact of housing on academic success.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Ability to navigate StarRez, Banner, Starfish, & Campus Labs.
  • Experience with developing, implementing, and evaluating student learning and development through a residential curriculum.
  • Previous experience with financial management, including, but not limited to budget development, financial analysis, and internal controls.
  • Involved regionally or nationally in professional associations within higher education.
  • Understanding of emerging issues in higher education, particularly in student services and housing.
  • Previous experience at an urban and/or arts-focused institution.

WORK MODE

  • Hybrid/Split - Employees hired for this position have regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus (eg: 1-4x/week) and also work some of the time remotely.

SALARY

$105,000 - $115,000 per annum
