Position Summary

The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for the effective operations of the Pharmacy department for Tri-City Medical Center. This individual will assess, plan, implement and evaluate all aspects of programs and ensure their financial viability, quality of service, efficient and effective operation. The Director is responsible for ensuring that twenty-four hour accountability for the delivery of quality services and operational management of assigned areas is consistently provided. The job encompasses integration, facilitation and coordination of the leadership, management, and operational services. This individual serves as a professional role model, leader, mentor and resource of the support services team. Consistently ensures that staff possesses knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate services to meet the support services’ needs of the Medical Center. The individual must consistently support the mission and values of the Medical Center, and acts as a role model relative to the Medical Center.

Major Position Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe, clean working environment, including unit based safety and infection control requirements.
  • Establish and coordinate the achievement of departmental goals and objectives.
  • Develop an organizational structure with clearly defined lines of authority and job responsibilities that enable employees to work together toward common objectives.
  • Integrate pharmacy services with other hospital departments and the medical staff to establish a multidisciplinary approach to improving patient care.
  • Develop, justify, lead and manage pharmacy programs and services to improve patient care.
  • Develop, approve, interpret, and enforce hospital and departmental policies and procedures to achieve service objectives
  • Assure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements for pharmacy operations including; Food and Drug Administration, Drug Enforcement Administration, California Board of Pharmacy.
  • Assure compliance with standards of practice from accreditation organizations; The Joint Commission, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, United State Pharmacopeia, The California Department of Public Health
  • Develop and maintain a system and program of performance improvement.
  • Assure pharmacy computer systems are contemporary, functional, and appropriately integrated into other systems within the Medical Center.
  • Prepare, monitor, and administer the pharmacy services operations budget.
  • Prepare and administer the pharmacy capital equipment budget.
  • Prepare, monitor, and administer the pharmacy services personnel budget
  • Seek innovative ways to reduce/contain costs and ensure quality services.
  • Assure that appropriate charge capture and billing systems for pharmacy charges are developed and maintained.
  • Working knowledge of 340 B pricing.
  • Establish policies and procedures for recruiting, hiring, orienting, training, supervising, motivating, evaluating, and disciplining staff.
  • Approve position descriptions and performance standards for all pharmacy staff.
  • Establish appropriate staffing levels and positions to achieve departmental and hospital objectives.


CMS Responsibilities

  • Ensure any needed written status reports, staff meeting minutes, schedules, and time logs are maintained.
  • Ensure Pharmacist responsibilities and job duties are clearly defined and include coordination of all pharmacy services activities.
  • Evaluate the competency and performance of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Managers including high-risk activities such as compounding of hazardous medications, pharmacy based prescription activities (e.g. aminoglycoside protocols) and pharmaceutical care for high-risk patients (pediatric, ICU, etc.).


Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years as a director of pharmacy or as a pharmacy manager with financial operation and leadership experience, required.
  • Computer literate
  • Communication skills at all levels
  • Leadership demonstration of openness to change through implementation of creative programs that support achievement of strategic initiatives.
  • Self-learning needs and strategies to enhance current competency to respond to new leadership demands.
  • Must be dependable, have integrity, initiative, tact, ability to work on details, ability to learn and possess a sense of values and ethical standards.


Education

  • Pharm D or PhD, required.


Licenses

  • Must have a valid California Pharmacist license, required.


Each new hire candidate who is offered employment must pass a physical evaluation, urine drug screen and pre-employment background checks before starting work.

  • Salary/Hourly wage range for this position is posted. Actual pay will be determined based on verified experience as well as internal equity.
