Indiana University Health is seeking individuals who embody these values to join our Sustainability leadership team in the role of Director of Sustainability for Energy.
The Director of Sustainability for Energy supports the development of energy and water programs, plans, and policies that meet Indiana University Health’s sustainability commitments and directs their implementation. The Director investigates utility, energy, and HVAC systems to identify conservation opportunities, prioritize them and identify barriers to implementation, and generate cost-effective changes that improve the energy efficiency. The incumbent directs the coordination and collaboration with other departments, health system leadership, government agencies and entities, and non-governmental organizations on matters related to the environmental impact of health care’s energy and water use.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Coordinating energy and water program functions, communications, employee interactions, and other activities that help build a culture of sustainability.
- Conducting an overview studies of specific building processes to identify how energy is consumed, the relative magnitudes of various modes of energy use, and the types of conservation techniques and technologies that are appropriate for various building operations.
- Managing energy benchmarking and assessments and analyzes energy consumption metrics in comparison to Practice Greenhealth top performers.
- Setting and measuring performance targets, identifies opportunities, and create control plans to sustain energy savings.
- Tracking energy use in EPA Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
This role will require statewide travel to IU Health facilities up to 25% of the time.

Key Relationships: Sustainability team, Facilities Directors, Design & Construction team, and Corporate Real Estate team
Candidate Qualifications
Candidates for the position will be selected from a diverse pool and will be evaluated according to the following criteria and competencies.
- Bachelor's Degree is required. Master's Degree is preferred.
- Requires 7-10 years of relevant experience. 5 years of experience of energy engineering, combined with a strong technical background.
- Expert knowledge in the area of health energy and environmental design, sustainability management policies, issues and initiatives.
- Expertise in U.S. Green Building Council rating systems.
- Expert knowledge of policies and procedures in the areas of design and construction; purchasing; contracts, grants and gift processing; building codes, and regulations.
- Advanced ability to foster collaboration across diverse constituencies, guide negotiations and manage change.
- Expert knowledge and experience leading energy efficiency and clean energy programs.
- Expert knowledge and experience integrating green building and sustainable procurement strategies.
- Expert knowledge and experience in change management and process improvement strategies.
- Mechanical Engineer with knowledge of HVAC systems and building automation controls preferred.
- Registered Professional Engineer; additional certifications an asset (e.g., Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or LEED Accredited Professional) preferred.
- ISSP Certified Sustainability Professional (preferred).
- Highly developed verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Highly proficient in all software applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Access), database applications and management.
