Penguin Young Readers is seeking a dynamic Editor for the New York Times best-selling WHO HQ series within the Penguin Workshop imprint. The ideal candidate has knowledge of and appreciation for children’s nonfiction, is experienced in nonfiction editing for ages 8 – 12 and can hit the ground running in a fast-paced environment. This person will report to the Director of WHO HQ and Nonfiction Publishing and can expect a highly collaborative community within the imprint.

The Role:

  • Acquire, edit, and manage a selection of projects from acquisition through publication
  • Negotiate acquisitions with agents and authors.
  • Present titles at internal meetings, including Launch, and elsewhere as required.
  • Be responsible for all editorial aspects of book development, including manuscript development and editing; copywriting including jacket, metadata, and other marketing copy as required.
  • Manage internal systems and data gathering: request pricing from Production, run profit & loss statements, research competitive titles, generate acquisition / contract paperwork, update the books system, pull sales figures from Bookscan, and stay on top of internal deadlines.
  • Work closely with our art, marketing, publicity, sales, and subsidiary rights departments throughout the publishing process to bring the books to market.


The Essentials:

  • Specific interest in and enthusiasm for nonfiction, biographies, and Middle Grade books
  • At least 3 years experience in structural and line editing, and nonfiction book publishing
  • Strong interpersonal / communication skills and an interest in working and learning collaboratively
  • Superior writing, copyediting, research, and Google skills
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and demonstrate strong attention to detail and follow-up
  • Ability to think creatively and work as a team to create a well-rounded list
  • Solid knowledge of the Middle Grade marketplace
  • Experience in negotiation and managing books through the editorial/production process
  • An organized, linear, and meticulous approach to work
  • Strong research skills (as applied to generating art notes, sourcing competitive titles for comparison, and cross-checking subject-specific information per book)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe PDFs, PowerPoint, Instagram, and the ability to swiftly learn new systems


The salary range for this position is $70,000-$72,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
