Editorial Assistant, Flatiron

Our ideal candidate will be a fast but thoughtful reader with a passion for books and the literary ecosystem, who works well independently but also thrives in a collaborative team environment. The Editorial Assistant position will provide support to Publisher and Executive Editor and will work on a broad range of bestselling and highly acclaimed fiction and nonfiction. Main responsibilities will be to manage administrative tasks and provide editorial support, but the role will also encompass training in editorial skills like editing, acquisition, project management, and author care, and the assistant will also directly liaise with authors, agents and other departments at Flatiron and Macmillan. What You'll Do

  • Administrative support including: keep track of upcoming deadlines, coordinate meeting schedules, ship packages, usher books through the production process, etc.
  • Prepare and traffic paperwork related to all parts of the publishing process including: metadata input, tip sheets, contract requests, check requests, author questionnaires, author photos, production memos, etc.
  • Act as a professional and responsive liaison between authors, agents, and other internal departments, including Production, Managing Editorial, Marketing, Contracts, Publicity, and Art.
  • Assist in the acquisition process: log, read, and evaluate submissions, run P&Ls, draft rejection letters, participate in weekly editorial meetings, contribute to the overall publishing strategy on individual titles, conduct market research, and hone acquisition skills and taste, etc.
  • Proofread, copyedit, and collaborate with supervisors on tip sheet copy, catalog copy, and jacket copy; hone editorial skills with a mind towards coediting and growing in the role.

  • Attention to detail and excellent follow through, clear communication about workload.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent writing and critical reading skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and ability to learn new systems.
  • Interest in a broad range of fiction and nonfiction.

Ideal Experience & Education

  • Demonstrated interest in books and the book publishing industry is a plus, but this is an entry level position.
  • College degree or equivalent work experience.

This role will have an annual salary of $47,500.
