Qualifications/Skills: Education/Certification:
- Bachelor's degree in related field.
- Master's degree from a recognized, accredited college or university, preferred.
- Valid Texas Teaching Certificate or Teaching Certificate from out of state appropriate for teaching Kinder through 6th grade and 4-8th grade Language Arts, Social Studies and Science.
- ESL Certification required during 1st year if not already obtained.
- Valid Texas Gifted and Talented Supplemental Certification.
- 30 clock hours of initial training in gifted education preferred (6 hours in each strand: Nature/Needs, Identification/Assessment, Social/Emotional Needs, Creativity/Instructional Strategies, and Differentiated Curriculum).
- Certification must meet requirements for becoming and remaining qualified for this position in a manner required by Federal and/or State law.
- Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in the effective use of technology.
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
- Ability to embrace and advocate for the special education needs of highly gifted children.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a classroom teacher in Language Arts/English/Reading preferred.
- Experience teaching early through intermediate elementary grades, preferred beginning reading through 4th grade writing experience.
- Experience with gifted and talented students preferred.
- Adhere to and embrace the district's philosophy of defining success and actively contribute to the achievement of the T-2-4 goal.
- Research high-quality materials, methodologies, and philosophies related to gifted and talented students (particularly highly gifted) from all socioeconomic levels and implement as appropriate.
- Utilizing various sources, provide accelerated individualized and small group instruction based on the TEKS to meet the unique needs of highly gifted students.
- Collaborate with team members and support all aspects of the school.
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities. Work cooperatively with special education teacher to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Work with other staff members to determine instructional goals, objectives and methods according to district requirements.
- Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
- Develop and maintain differentiated learning plans for each student.
- Plan student activities, programs, service learning projects, and field trips.
- Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits. Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of school district.
- Assume responsibilities for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the Director of the Spring Branch Academic Institute.
- Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. Assist in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
- Maintain accurate student records.
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals and teachers.
- Provide extensive communication with parents.
- Support the expansion and development of the school.
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
- Keep informed of and comply with state, district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
- Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerizes reports, records and other documents required.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Attend required gifted and talented program staff development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain emotional control under stress.
- Work with frequent interruptions.
- This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.
- Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
- Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desk and other classroom equipment.
