The Fiction Reader is a part-time role within The New Yorker’s Fiction department. The Fiction Reader is responsible for assisting the members of the Fiction department in keeping the department running smoothly. This may include assisting with the tracking and evaluation of a high volume of fiction submissions. This is a Guild position.
Primary responsibilities:
- Assist with tracking, reading, and assessing large numbers of fiction submissions.
- Assist Fiction department editors with fiction-related projects, including audio recordings, newsletters, etc., as well as with some administrative tasks.
- Additional miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Fiction Editor or other members of the Fiction department.
- Some experience in the editorial department of a literary magazine or publishing house.
- Familiarity with contemporary fiction and the ability to make informed and thoughtful assessments of submissions under consideration.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, especially the ability to set and meet reading deadlines.
- Familiarity with The New Yorker, its style, and its writers.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ambitious, proactive, and a quick learner.
