General Superintendent

OBAYASHI CORPORATION is seeking qualified candidates with experience in Heavy Civil and Underground Construction to fill a lead role as a General Superintendent providing construction and tunnel mining expertise on a tunnel project, including planning, scheduling, and overseeing production. Reporting to Project Manager, this position is for an immediate full-time assignment on a job site near Portland, OR. The primary work environment is a construction job site, which includes shafts and tunnels.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise, manage, and lead tunneling staff, including engineers, superintendents, foremen, and construction workers, from project inception to completion; coordinate with superintendents, subcontractors, suppliers, and other project team members to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Interface professionally with clients, their representatives, and labor union representatives regarding construction operations.
  • Collaborate with the project team to develop comprehensive work plans, schedules, and operational strategies to meet production goals, schedules, and budget targets.
  • Oversee and manage the procurement of equipment, materials, tools and supplies for the construction of the project. Ensure that adequate materials and equipment inventories are available when needed to support continuous production and project requirements.
  • Identify potential risks and develop mitigation measures while promoting a Safety-First culture. Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and jurisdictional codes and regulations.
  • Organize and participate in safety and quality inspections, enforcing company rules and policies, and implementing corrective measures and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Monitor and supervise the delivery, assembly/installation, testing, commissioning, and production performance of tunneling equipment.
  • Manage craft employees' activities, including reviewing and verifying daily time sheets and reports, authorizing and controlling overtime hours, and handling hiring and terminations.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum Experience: 10+ years of recent supervisory experience on tunnel projects in soft ground conditions
  • Preferred Experience: Rib & lagging experience
  • Education: High school graduate or higher.

  • Able to work after hours, weekends and on call when needed.
  • Ability to walk and work on outdoor construction job sites.
  • Ability to lift and/or lift up to 40 lbs.
