The Breakers Hotel, c. 1926 On March 18, 1925, Henry Flagler’s The Breakers Hotel succumbed to a massive fire that destroyed the all-wood resort for the third time. On December 4, 1925, the Florida East Coast Hotel Company (the Flagler family company), signed a contract with Turner Construction to build the new Breakers in an unimaginable 11-months. With the help of 1,200 skilled craftspeople, Turner delivered the Breakers on December 29, 1926, as promised. The new The Breakers Palm Beach was designed by architects Schultze & Weaver in the Italian Renaissance style and features a 200’ long main lobby with high-arched ceilings. Most importantly, the team abandoned wooden construction for fireproof concrete. #BuiltbyTurner #TurnerFlorida #BreakersHotel #Concrete #PalmBeach

What an invigorating Climate Week it’s been for Turner Construction Company in NYC! Julia Gisewite, LEED AP, WELL AP, Turner’s Chief Sustainability Officer, kicked off events Monday night at our HQ office in Hudson Yards- a LEED Platinum, WELL Platinum and WELL H&S certified space- in partnership with Ceres, Inc. and Johnson Controls. Julia introduced the Collaborative Pathways panel discussion, where speakers highlighted the importance of combining strengths of public/private partnerships to solve the complex challenges of shifting to a fully sustainable built environment. Many thanks to our moderator, Alli Gold Roberts of the U.S. Climate Alliance, and our speakers: Chris Castro of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE); John O'Leary of the New York State Executive Chamber; Julia Casagrande, P.E. of NYC Mayor's Office of Climate & Environmental Justice; and Kathleen (Katie) McGinty of Johnson Controls. On Tuesday, Nelson Russom, Turner’s Waste & Circularity Program Manager, spoke on a panel together with other experts on Pioneering Circular Construction: Strategies, Successes, and the Road Ahead, held at Thornton Tomasetti’s HQ office. Panelists discussed the current state and challenges facing circularity within design and construction, highlighting ways to maximize successes through creativity, collaboration, and early integration among all stakeholders from design through execution. Innovative strategies and policies, the TRUE Zero Waste certification system, and NYCEDC’s Circular Design & Construction Guidelines were shared. On Wednesday, Julia participated in a Decarbonization by Design panel discussion, hosted by the J.M. Kaplan Fund. Panelists discussed many of the industry barriers to scaling decarbonization, from fragmented supply chains to policy gaps, green premiums to technical hurdles. With lots of work needed to address these challenges, Turner’s scale and resources allows us to treat each project as an opportunity to overcome these obstacles. And on Thursday, Monika Serrano, Turner’s Resilience Program Manager spoke at the Extreme Heat & Health Innovation event, co-hosted by Tailwind, Climate Health Innovation & Learning Lab, University of Colorado Climate & Health Program, and La Isla Network, underscoring the urgent need to address the growing threat of extreme heat, a major threat to the built environment and the construction workforce. Alongside other experts, Monika emphasized the importance of quantifying heat's health impacts and enhancing awareness of both short- and long-term risks. With existing solutions available and more innovations on the horizon, now is the time to implement these strategies to protect public health and thrive in a rapidly warming world. Special thanks to all who helped convene and host each of our discussions this week. We thoroughly enjoyed connecting with others in the industry, the exchange of ideas, and all of the earnest dedication exemplified by everyone that participated.

🏨 Haddon Hall, c. 1929 Redeveloped by Turner in 1929, Haddon Hall is one of the oldest hotels in Atlantic City. Currently operated as Resorts Casino Hotel, Haddon’s history dates back to 1869, when Samuel and Susanna Hunt opened Haddon Hall. During the next century, Haddon followed many other hotels in Atlantic City by phasing out their wooden structure in order to build larger, more impressive brick buildings. When gambling was legalized in 1976, the property was sold to Resorts International for $2.5 million and became Atlantic City’s first operating casino in 1978. #BuiltbyTurner #TurnerNewJersey #AtlanticCity #Casino #Hotel
