Brookhaven National Laboratory was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Our Electron-Ion Collider Directorate (EIC) seeks a Group Leader, Infrastructure Cooling & Mechanical Systems. In this role, you will plan, review, and monitor the design and construction of the mechanical engineering work of the Group. The scope of mechanical engineering work includes building HVAC, controls, fire protection, chilled water, process cooling water, plumbing and underground utilities. This position reports directly to the EIC Infrastructure Division Director.

Join the BNL team and be part of building the next discovery facility for science!

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop and define scope for EIC cooling and mechanical systems.
  • Coordinate with other groups to ensure efficient and accurate communication of cooling and mechanical system design, interface, and documentation
  • Serve as technical lead for various aspects of engineering management, to include:
    • Develop detailed cost and schedule estimates for the labor and material resources
    • Monitor and perform evaluations throughout the project.
    • Execute the defined cooling and mechanical system scope within project cost and schedule
    • Develop specifications and prepare procurement documents
    • Identify and recommend value engineering opportunities/changes
    • Direct configuration management activities
  • May oversee, monitor, and assure compliance of design firms, consultants and construction contractors with design parameters, project requirements, and all applicable code requirements. Maintain documentation of contract modifications, contract correspondence, inspections, records, and correspondence with the contractor. Review and approve design and construction documents
  • Detail the required system engineering by performance of calculations and analysis to support the requirements necessary for the operation of the mechanical and cooling systems
  • May assign, train, and supervise the work of group members
(Selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on the depth and breadth of relevant engineering knowledge, skills, and experience.)
