Position Description
The Ashworth Laboratory at UCSF is looking for a Junior/Assistant Research Specialist to join our team. The selected candidate will conduct research under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Rickman, and members of the Ashworth Lab. The Specialist will learn to utilize a variety of research techniques and will have the opportunity to be a co-author on publications. The lab utilizes functional genomics, cell biology, CRISPR and small molecule screens, and mouse modeling approaches to explore how genetics influence tumor response. Our current research is investigating novel approaches to targeting DNA repair vulnerabilities in tumors by both small molecule and immune based therapies.
We are seeking a two-year commitment. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to gain research experience before applying to graduate, medical, or MD/PhD programs.
The Role Of The Specialist Will Be To
See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300 - $65,900.

The Role Of The Specialist Will Be To
- Willingness and ability to learn a spectrum of new methods and skills
- Mammalian tissue culture, CRISPR engineering and generation of stable cell lines, in vitro and cellular assays
- Molecular biology techniques including basic cloning, plasmid design and preparation, DNA extraction, immunofluorescence, western blotting, flow cytometry, etc.
- Conducting immunocompetent mouse allograft studies, and when needed assistance with mouse colony management
- Assist with lab maintenance duties
- Applicants need to be self-motivated, fast learners, critical thinkers, and enthusiastic about science and medicine.
- Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in Molecular Biology (or a related field) at time of hire.
- Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in Molecular Biology (or a related field) at time of hire.
- One year or more of research experience in a wet lab setting.
- Must be able/willing to perform animal experiments.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to document experiments.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written).
- Experience performing basic molecular biology techniques such as molecular cloning, nucleic acid isolation, PCR, etc.
- Applicants’ materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.
- Experience with mammalian tissue culture and flow cytometry.
- Experience in molecular biology techniques.
- Experience with molecular cloning.
- Experience with mouse handling.
