Title: Learning Specialist

Occupational Summary

Duke University Athletics Academic Support Services office is seeking an experienced, energetic, and dedicated individual to fill the role of Learning Specialist. This role is critical in supporting student-athletes in their academic pursuits by providing specialized and individualized educational services that foster academic and personal success. The Learning Specialist will interface directly with student-athletes and collaborate closely with academic coordinators and other support staff to design and implement effective and specialized learning strategies and promote a culture of academic excellence within the Duke University Athletics Department.

Essential Functions

  • Individualized Academic Support: (75%)
  • Conduct academic assessments to identify learning strengths and challenges among caseload of student-athletes.
  • Provide instruction in research-based learning strategies to help students enhance academic skills in collaboration with campus partners, including the Academic Resource Center.
  • Design, implement, and monitor personalized academic plans and strategies tailored to the unique needs of each student-athlete, while maintaining accurate records of student progress.
  • Collaborate with academic coordinators to track and monitor academic progress of student-athletes and report out findings.
  • Assist student-athletes with learning differences in navigating academic accommodations and resources.
  • Academic Programming: (20%)
  • Design and deliver workshops, seminars, and one-on-one consultations on study strategies, time management, test-taking skills, and academic success techniques with campus partners, including the Academic Resource Center.
  • Collaborate with academic coordinators to integrate academic skill-building into student-athlete support programs.
  • In conjunction with the Associate Director of Academic Services/Director of Educational Services, develop and coordinate trainings for mentors and tutors while remaining current on learning strategies and other available tools proven successful with student-athlete population.
  • Learning Differences Support: (5%)
  • In conjunction with Associate Director of Academic Services/Director of Educational Services, coordinate and/or perform educational screening of incoming student-athletes.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required in Education, Counseling, Higher Education or a related field.
  • Experience working as a learning specialist in academic support services in higher education setting, preferably in a Division I athletics department (or equivalent experience).
  • Knowledge of learning theory, academic coaching techniques, and strategies for supporting student-athletes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of NCAA compliance regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a Master's degree in counseling, education, student development, athletic administration, or a related field.

Experience

Work requires 2 years experiene in academic advising, teaching, or counseling at the university level is preferred and demonstrates the ability to work with a diverse population of students, coaches, and university administrators, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
