General Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director, Tissue Recovery, the Manager, Tissue Recovery (TR Manager) leads and guides the Tissue Recovery staff towards accomplishing the organization’s mission and goals by providing oversight of daily tissue recovery operations. The TR Manager is accountable for the Tissue Recovery staff’s adherence to all regulatory and accrediting agency standards, including, but not limited to, CMS, UNOS, AOPO, FDA and AATB, as well as all internal organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines. The TR Manager will assist the Director in creating an annual budget and submitting donor projections. In addition, the TR Manager will assist the Director in adhering to processor monthly, quarterly, and annual processor caps, updating the tissue algorithm and communicating changes to all affected departments. The TR Manager has general oversight of staffing and maintaining the proper number of trained tissue recovery staff to meet the clinical demands of the organization.

Will travel to regional offices in Falls Church, Va and Baltimore, MD.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a health-related field preferred. A professional license may be substituted in lieu of or in addition to pursuing a Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 5 years related experience required with demonstrated knowledge in tissue screening and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Current tissue banking specialist (CTBS) certification.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • At the request of Human Resources, participates in the screening and hiring process of candidates.
  • Maintains and updates the departmental performance management board and reports these departmental projects/goals on a routine schedule as defined by organizational leadership.
  • Verifies payroll for signoff on a bi-weekly basis per departmental protocol.
  • Approves paid time-off (PTO) requests from staff per departmental protocol.
  • Approves expense reports.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

  • Must be certified as a tissue banking specialist (CTBS) and maintain that certification in good standing.
  • Must remain proficient in all regulatory and accrediting agency standards and policies.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists the Director in serving as a liaison to the organization’s tissue processing partners, ensuring compliance with processor specific policies and procedures. Maintains effective relationships with tissue processors and attends meetings, conference/video calls as required.
  • Works with the Hospital Services team to identify opportunities for increased donation through hospital education and presentation of common integrated message. This includes providing both public and professional in-services or education when needed.
  • In conjunction with the tissue recovery supervisors, the Manager will insure the ongoing clinical competence of the staff through a variety of methods including ongoing education, processor feed-back reports, case reviews/debriefs, self-paced learning modules, case participation, wet-lab, TrainCaster compliance, focused learning and training activities and participation in local and national meetings.
  • In conjunction with the Supervisor(s), the Manager leads staff to increase tissue donation volume and grafts per donor and overall quality of recoveries.
  • In collaboration with Quality Systems, ensures timely response to SOP modifications and compliance, CAPA, ongoing competencies and quality improvement projects.
  • In conjunction with the Education department, manages the training efforts and training compliance timelines for the TR Department. This includes the development and implementation of department-specific training in conjunction with ancillary partners such as processors, vendors, funeral homes, OCME, transport companies, transplant centers and/or hospital partners.
  • Participates as a member of Leadership, including attendance at required meetings, retreats, planning sessions and other meetings as necessary. Maintains effective and professional working relationships with departmental leaders, as well as personnel involved in the donation process.
  • Participates on regional and national committees as appropriate. Attends an AATB, EBAA, AOPO meeting or workshop at least once every year.
  • Keeps knowledge current through participation in NATCO, AOPO, AATB, EATB, etc.
  • On a rotating basis, serves as emergency contact for applicable departments, including sick calls and emergencies. During times of decreased staffing/emergency, may be required to fill schedule holes and/or timeframes necessary.
  • Participates as a member of the Leadership Team demonstrating Infinite Legacy core values and attending meetings such as team meetings, retreats, planning sessions, etc.
  • Serves as a tissue administrator on-call (TAOC) and meets minimum TAOC shift requirements and responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

This position requires consistent availability, travel, and certain physical, language, and communication abilities, including:

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable, insured automobile for transportation.
  • Frequent prolonged use of computer screen may produce visual fatigue.
  • Work requires attention to detail, flexibility, and meeting deadlines which may produce mental fatigue.
  • Work requires frequent standing and walking for photocopying, moving, and stocking supplies and for other support of office staff.
  • Ability to move or traverse within an office, hospital, and outdoors. Standing, walking, and lifting associated with organ procurement
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate telephones and computers.
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 to read electronic medical charts and computer screens.
  • Possible mental fatigue and stress associated with emergencies and management issues.
  • Ability to accurately communicate, converse, and exchange information in English over the telephone and in person.
  • Computer literacy in a Microsoft Windows environment and demonstrated competency in the use of Microsoft Office software programs.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
  • May require extended hours and travel during emergencies.
  • Frequent prolonged use of CRT screen may produce visual fatigue.
  • Standing, walking, and lifting associated with organ procurement.
  • Possible mental fatigue ad stress associated with emergencies and management issues.
  • Travel to national meetings and conferences.
  • This position is Level 1 – High level exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens and TB. Staff members are in a hospital setting and have direct contact with donors or donor organs and tissues through donor management, recovery, and processing.

This position requires employees to be fully vaccinated and be able to provide proof.
