Marketing Assistant, Avalon Travel

The Avalon Travel imprint of Hachette Book Group is seeking a Marketing Assistant to join our team and work on the Rick Steves and Moon Travel Guides lists. We’re looking for a dynamic, creative, enthusiastic individual with a curiosity for travel and brand marketing.

Our ideal candidate has excellent writing and organizational skills, a problem-solving approach to tasks, and can collaborate well with a team that communicates frequently via both email and chat. Avalon Travel is based in Oakland, CA, and Hachette Book Group is headquartered in New York City, and we are open to hiring in either location, though some availability during Pacific Time (-8 UTC) business hours is required. With team members working across time zones, good communication habits are paramount. This candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with seasoned professionals and gain hands-on professional experience as they own day-to-day tasks, help with special projects, and attend interdepartmental meetings.

THE PERSON IN THIS POSITION WILL:

  • Maintain and oversee our title workflow, a project management tool that tracks key milestones in our publishing process
  • Participate in weekly marketing meetings to help brainstorm campaign ideas and collaborate with the marketing team, as well as attend other marketing/publicity/sales meetings as required.
  • Plan for our seasonal sales meetings and prepare materials like fact sheets, sell sheets, and title lists for sales kits
  • Oversee metadata updates for a portion of our publishing list, and research keywords to optimize for SEO
  • Prepare graphics like A+ content and 3d book shots for our titles according to brand style guides
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Manager to update the Moon.com website
  • Respond to—or route appropriately—incoming correspondence (most often from authors) and take ownership of seasonal processes including coordinating author questionnaires and awards submissions
  • Other administrative tasks like mailings and invoice processing/tracking as needed

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Has excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Possesses a great attitude and a desire to learn as well as excellent organizational skills
  • Has an ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Has a strong focus on details and deadlines
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel
  • WordPress, social media, or design experience (InDesign, Photoshop, or Canva) is helpful, but not required
