MTS School Social Worker ($64,950 - $103,923) DOE

Under general supervision of the Director of Student Services or their designee and Building Principal, the Licensed School Social Worker provides direct and indirect social work services to students experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioral problems that interfere with their performance in school, and facilitates communication among school, home and community providers.

  • Coordinates and collaborates with Tribal and public social service programs.
  • Assists teachers and parents in developing and implementing behavior management plans to remediate problem behaviors.
  • Assists students to improve their academic, personal and social functioning.
  • Provides social skills, anger management, stress reduction or other similar instruction to students who are experiencing social/emotional/behavioral problems that interfere with their learning or the ability of others to learn.
  • Provides short-term individual and group counseling to students who are experiencing social/emotional/behavioral problems that interfere with their learning or the ability of others to learn.
  • Provides information to families and assists them in accessing long-term or intensive counseling services, as needed. Assist with Adult Protective Services investigation, Domestic Violence assistance.
  • Communicates with staff, administration and parents concerning students’ social, emotional and behavioral progress.
  • Provides information to students and parents about services available within the community. Makes referrals to community providers, as appropriate.
  • Consults and collaborates with social services, mental health and other community providers.
  • Works with Development Disabilities and Disabilities Vocational Rehab Program and Support Enforcement, to assist clients in obtaining services.
  • Works with local tribal entities in obtaining application information on clients through the GA program and work first.
  • Refers clients to Tribal or community agencies and other resources.
  • Develops all necessary forms and record-keeping systems. Compiles records and prepares narrative and statistical reports. Performs needs assessment to determine future funding.
  • Develops and maintains a confidential client filing system.
  • Reviews service plan and performs follow-up to determine quantity and quality of services provided to students and status of student’s case.
  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.


Graduation from accredited university or college with a Masters in Social Work(MSW) and must hold or be able to obtain a ESA Cert. Two years’ experience in social work, preferably working in schools with Native American students and communities.

Listening to clients to thoroughly understand their issues. Computer usage, including word processing and spreadsheets. Counseling techniques and practices, Confidentiality issues and laws. Tribal and community resources and programs. Regulations relevant to social service work. Federal and state funding sources. Knowledge of Federal Low Income Energy Program, General Assistance Program, Family Violence Program.

The working conditions described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. The employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to walk, drive a motor vehicle and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
