Operational Excellence & Training Specialist

Job description: Basic Function

Executes the ongoing development, sustainment, and improvement of conduct of operations principles and operational excellence.  Supports the corporate Learning and Performance training programs in developing and revising content.

Job Duties
  • Promotes the vision for operational reliability, drives efforts and stewards programs to measure and improve operational reliability and safety performance.
  • Facilitates sharing of learnings and best practices from within the organization, including but not limited to the operational networks as well as from industry.
  • Assists in coordinating efforts with other corporate departments to prioritize work and execute lean and efficient fleet improvements.
  • Plays a key role in site operational review including in plant field work.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of operations owned corporate standards.
  • Assist sites in gap closure and improvement plans.
  • Supports the delivery of corporate training curriculum. Provides secondary support to primary instructors/facilitators for training sessions on various topics including front line leadership training.
  • Supports the review of existing training programs for continued improvement.
  • Support operator development program enhancements and the training development initiatives.
  • Assists the operational networks in regularly scheduled online and face to face meetings.
  • Works with the operational networks to create and track network goals.
  • Challenges the network to align on decisions necessary to support fleet initiatives such that the network defines and own the work processes and associate initiative details.
  • Special assignments or tasks may be assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time at the sole and complete discretion.
Experience

A minimum of eight years of experience in a refinery location in process engineering or operations roles and a minimum of three years of work experience in operations supervision. 

Education Level

A minimum of an Associates Degree or equivalent is required.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is preferred.

Required Skills
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well within a team and influence without direct supervisory oversight.
  • A strong desire to lead operational process improvements.
  • Ability to work on multiple parallel projects and convert high level instruction into actions and results.
  • Proficient with general software applications such as MSWord, MSExcel, PowerBI, etc.
  • Ability and interest in creating MS PowerPoint presentations.
  • Experience with refinery process control system alarm philosophy and operating windows.
  • Experience with shift management including shift turnover and shift logs.
  • Familiarity with operator rounds and rounds data processing.
  • Direct knowledge of refinery operating practices including use of procedures, equipment preparation for maintenance, safe work permitting, lockout tagout, unit startup, unit shutdown, and process unit maintenance during turnaround.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

Limited to no direct oversight of employees but an ability to lead and influence without direct supervisory oversight.

Work Conditions

Office and refinery based with up to 50% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors environment, and driver environment based including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, and working in confined spaces. Subject to working in varying weather and road conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, lifting and/or carrying up to 50lbs, pushing and/or pulling up to 50lbs, climbing up to 150ft, ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, perceiving color differences.
