What are Trust Fund Positions?

Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. Overview

In 2026, the United States of America turns 250 years old, and the Smithsonian Institution (SI) seeks to bring together communities across the country to focus on our shared future while contemplating the consequences of our history. In honor of this important anniversary, the Smithsonian's Office of Digital Transformation (ODT) seeks to launch a new digital platform to enhance how the public engages with the Smithsonian via a dynamic, accessible experience tailored to users' individual needs and interests.

This temporary position will report to ODT's Head of Digital Transformation and will provide support to the 250th project described above by leading end-to-end product development of the platform and collaborating and building alignment with key stakeholders to ensure project success.

The official title of the position is Information Technology Specialist (Policy and Planning) with a working title of Product Manager.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Drives the execution of all processes in the product lifecycle, including product and market research, planning requirement and roadmap development, and product development, launch and sustainment.
  • Establishes a vision and ensures all team members and stakeholders have a shared understanding of product objectives, goals and metrics.
  • Creates a product strategy, roadmap, and develops a communications strategy supporting product goals.

Qualification Requirements

  • Knowledge of a variety of product management best practices for the assessment and improvement of product effectiveness or the improvement of management processes and systems.
  • Comprehensive skill in project management, preparing and delivering reports, and making recommendations to management.
  • Skill to plan, organize and direct team study work/special projects and to influence management to support and implement recommendations.
