Program Manager, Diversity Initiatives - Student Belonging

The Program Manager of Diversity Initiatives reports to the Executive Director of Diversity Initiatives.

The Program Manager has three core responsibilities that encompass, marketing, student engagement including international students and management.

The Program Manager manages programming, and leads the department in DEI communication and marketing campaigns. Develops marketing resources to effectively communicate programs, resources, initiatives, and opportunities to stakeholders and constituency groups.

The Program Manager is responsible for the co-curricular and cross-cultural initiatives that are related to and significant for students and international students’ engagement, success, and holistic development at Azusa Pacific University. With an understanding and commitment to advancing APU’s DEI division distinctives which include but are not limited to cultivating a diverse community, inclusive climate, and an equitable environment for all students including international students. Vital responsibility of assessing the engagement and retention rate of students of color on an on-going basis and reporting to the Executive Director of Campus Life Diversity Initiatives recommended action steps on retaining our ethnically and culturally diverse student population.

The Program Manager leads, supervises, student staff housed in the Student Center for Reconciliation and Diversity (SCRD). The position is a central point of contact for the Student Center for Reconciliation and Diversity (SCRD), Ethnic Student Organizations, and other diversity-related campaigns for students; oversees programming, facilitates training. In the supervisory capacity, they supervise student interns, graduate assistants, and student leaders of ethnic organizations.

Required Education

  • Master’s degree in counseling or education with an emphasis in student affairs, or related discipline.

Required Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of experience with student programming and advising.
  • 2 years of Cross-cultural experience and understanding.
  • Experience facilitating diversity training, multicultural programming, and/or intercultural or social justice education.
  • Demonstrated experience at working in an educational setting with ethnically diverse college students and supporting student success and addressing opportunity gaps.
  • Experience developing diversity and reconciliation programming from a Christian perspective.
  • Experience managing/ supervising teams, managing organizational processes.
  • Experience with student success programming such as TRIO, Summer Bridge, or new student orientation.
  • Experience in developing and implementing programs.
  • Background in international student services preferred.

Primary Duties/Essential Functions

Marketing

  • Manage SCRD website, Facebook, and Instagram pages with updated events and information.

Program Management

  • Participates with DEI leadership in the Multi-Ethnic Leadership (MEL) Scholars selection process.
  • Sponsors and advises multi-ethnic student organizations regarding promotional strategies, event planning, and budget management.
  • Supervise and manage undergraduate student interns in developing campus-wide intercultural events that include but are not limited to:
    • Admission Events
    • Heritage Month Celebrations
    • Ethnic Organization Multicultural Events
    • SCRD Speaker Series
    • Diversity-oriented events
    • Assist with programming for Male Success Initiatives
    • Assist with programming for the Pathway Scholars Program
  • Develop professional competencies for Ethnic Organizations (EO) and facilitate fall and spring training opportunities for student leaders and EO faculty/staff sponsors.
  • Monitor event programming budgets, negotiate performance contracts and pay outside vendors for equipment and services.
  • Coordinate the use of appropriate facilities with departments/individuals as necessary for events and on behalf of ethnic organizations.
  • Assist with the implementation of the on-boarding process for all students throughout the year.
  • Oversee the Haggard Scholars program by coordinating selection of scholars with campus partners, and providing development opportunities and programming support to the Haggard scholars.
  • Develop and implement initiatives which will provide cross-cultural and intercultural awareness and interactions as well as social, cultural, and leadership opportunities for international students/scholars.
  • Coordinate fall and spring Global Student Orientation with Campus Life, Enrollment, and Graduate and Professional Student Engagement.
Engagement

  • Support current student retention support services such as the Black Male Success Initiative, Latino Male Success Initiative, etc.
  • Partner with the Undergraduate Academic Success Center to develop retention strategies
  • Collaborates with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in planning annual Connections Preview Day for underrepresented high school students.
  • Design student event programming policies for undergraduate student workers and multi-ethnic organizations.
  • Respond to students and others who inquire about information on cross-cultural programs, scholarships, internships, fellowships, conferences, university services, and other resources.
  • Serve as a resource person and potential mentor to students, especially students of color, coaching students on academic, personal, and spiritual concerns, referring students to appropriate resources as needed.
  • Collaborate with various university departments in providing support services related to the retention of underrepresented ethnic minority students.
  • Research ideas, theories, and other cutting-edge programs that may benefit the growth of programs within SCRD.
  • Provide an essential linkage between APU’s main international student culture and campus culture by maintaining contact with and collaborating with various campus partners.

Other

  • Serve on DEI committees, working groups, and/or counsels per the direction of divisional leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by DEI leadership.

  • In agreement with the purpose and goals of Azusa Pacific University in providing a Christian-based higher education for its students.

Compensation

  • Grade 10: $25.94 to $29.83 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
