Overview

The City of Gresham is seeking a qualified and enthusiastic individual to fill a full-time position as a Public Utility Worker 2 (PUW 2) in our Parks Operations team of Parks & Recreation Services.

This job posting will remain open until the position is filled. First review of applications will take place on July 10, 2024. This recruitment will be used to fill a current vacancy and potential future vacancies.

The Public Utility Worker 2 - Parks position performs regular and recurring installation, maintenance, and repair activities for City parks, open spaces, systems and facilities. This position will operate a variety of light and heavy equipment to accomplish work functions. This recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies in this job classification for Parks Operations. Successful candidates will be notified and will remain on an eligibility list for consideration for up to 180 days.

Position Description

The Public Utility Worker 2 - Parks performs Parks Maintenance work. The position works out of the City of Gresham Operations Center and reports to the Public Works Superintendent for Parks. The Parks Division consists of eleven full-time employees who work collaboratively in a team- oriented environment to maintain City Parks in support of Gresham residents and the public.

What you will get to do

  • Use a variety of hand and power-operated tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, hand and small riding mowers, tapping machine, power hacksaw, drills, jackhammer, welders, compressor, and portable concrete saw.
  • Operate all departmental heavy equipment as directed including backhoe, loaders, dump truck, mower and tractor.
  • Research maps and related records. Use City Graphic Information System (GIS) to locate City properties, easements, etc.
  • Operate light-duty trucks in picking up and delivering materials and supplies and to collect and remove debris from different locations as assigned.
  • Perform traffic control and flagging duties as required.
  • Control vegetation by applying pesticides and other removal techniques in accordance with state regulations around public works structures and work sites.
  • Respond to public inquiries and service requests in a courteous and timely manner; provides information within scope of knowledge or refers to other City staff.
  • Maintain parks, open spaces, trails and greenways.
  • Mow, trim and edge. Pull weeds, prune shrubs and other related duties using hand tools. Maintain sports fields including irrigation, over seeding, mowing, aeration, fertilization, sod repair, top dressing and weed control.
  • Prepare, construct, install, repair, and maintain park fixtures and facilities such as restrooms, shelters, play structures, exercise equipment, benches, tables, signs, paved walkways, trails and bridges. Installs and maintains irrigation systems. Repair and report vandalism and removegraffiti.
  • Perform basic carpentry and cement work, welding, and painting as necessary to accomplish primary activities.
  • Receive and process incoming work orders from citizens and park users in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Remove and dispose of unsanitary debris, illegally dumped materials and transient camp structures.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed outside in varying and extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time where employees are exposed to slippery surfaces, vibrations, excessively loud noises from construction equipment, exposure to live sewer systems, human debris, drug paraphernalia, heavy equipment, working in and around trenches, hazardous gases, fumes, paint, chemicals and pesticides. Physical effort is required to perform heavy manual labor in confined and cramped spaces and uncomfortable conditions, climb ladders, bend, reach, push / pull a variety of items, and stand for long periods of time. Regular lifting of objects and equipment ranging in weight from 25 to 85 lbs. is required. Subject to 24- hour call back for emergency conditions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. and
  • One to four years of experience in landscape maintenance, facilities maintenance, or general construction.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Good driving record (as defined by our driving matrix below)
  • Must be at least 18 years old at time of hire

Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain the following certifications within six months after hire. The City will provide the training necessary to obtain these certifications upon hire.

  • Oregon or Washington Commercial Class A driver's license with Air Brakes and Tanker endorsements
  • Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT)Flagger Certification
  • First Aid & CPR/AED Certification
  • Confined Space Certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous parks maintenance experience
  • Public Pesticide Spray Applicators License

DRIVING MATRIX:You will be disqualified from this process if you possess any of the following driving infractions:

  • A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury.
  • Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years.
  • Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one- year period.
  • Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period.
  • Any offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal

background check, driving record review, job-related physical and drug screen.

Selection process timeline

We anticipate the first round of interviews will take place the week of July 29, 2024. Invitations will be sent via email about one week prior. Interviews will take place in person at Gresham City Hall.
