Role Overview

SD Foundation is looking for a Research Analyst to assist the Legislative Counsel in updating and reorganizing their database of state election law legislation. The Research Analyst is a temporary project hire that will need to develop familiarity with internal systems, and work in databases and spreadsheets with the goal of reviewing all the data in our current State Tracker. This position prefers knowledge of state legislation, voting and election law in order to read policy summaries and research changes to election law and apply labels and a tagging system to current bills in the tracker system.

This is a fully remote, part-time, flexible hour project hire position for an internal database project. 10-20 hours per week, available to start as soon as possible with an end date of December 15. The project hire will be reporting to the Director of Legislative Tracking.

SD Foundation is a fully remote organization. This position can be based anywhere in the United States.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Assist Legislative Counsel in updating database of state election law legislation
    • Develop familiarity with internal and public-facing systems for categorizing legislation
    • Read summaries of legislation drafted by Legislative Counsel with high attention to detail
    • Apply internal and public-facing labels to legislation as appropriate based on summaries
  • Assist Legislative Counsel in reorganization of database of state election law dating back to 2006
    • Work in databases and spreadsheets to organize historical legal information
    • Research changes to election law during this time period
  • Other duties as assigned may include: research existing laws on issues relating to voter access and election administration.
    • Perform initial scoping of the national landscape on new topics
    • Gather and organize primary documents
  • Operate as a member of a highly collaborative team by participating in regular meetings with members of the Law and Policy Team as requested.

  • Experience and comfort working in spreadsheets and databases such as Google Sheets and Airtable
  • Strong project and time-management skills
  • Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to collaborate with the rest of the team
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a commitment to acting on the belief that racial equity and social justice are critical components to our work
  • Familiarity with state legislatures, voting, and election law preferred
  • Law school experience is helpful and preferred
  • Public Policy fellowship or internship is useful experience

Compensation And Benefits

The pay rate for the Research Analyst (Project Hire) position is $30-35 per hour . T he base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.

Temporary or project hire employees are typically not eligible for benefits (medical, dental, vision, fringe benefits, holiday, tech or home office reimbursements, vacation or paid time off), except as required by state, federal, and local law. Temporary or project hire employees are eligible for paid sick leave and may be eligible for medical insurance if they meet ACA eligibility.
