About us
Through strategic litigation, training, communication, activism and research, the Institute for Justice advances a rule of law under which individuals can control their destinies as free and responsible members of society. IJ litigates to secure economic liberty, educational choice, private property rights, freedom of speech and other vital individual liberties, and to restore constitutional limits on the power of government. In addition, IJ trains law students, lawyers and policy activists in the tactics of public interest litigation. Through these activities, IJ illustrates and extends the benefits of freedom to those whose full enjoyment of liberty is denied by government.

New Institute for Justice video for a case we are appealing to the Supreme Court. A family in Atlanta suffered when FBI agents raided the wrong home. Gabe was 7 when he was startled awake by a flashbang grenade and heavily armed men running into his bedroom. When government employees make mistakes, Congress wanted people to be allowed to sue. But courts have created loopholes that make the law dependent on where people live. That's wrong and IJ is asking the Court to take the case and end the legal confusion. https://lnkd.in/eg4W74MN

🚨 New Case Alert 🚨 Today, a Pennsylvania man filed a federal lawsuit against the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission after one of its officers conducted warrantless searches around his home multiple times in the summer of 2023. Tim Thomas, represented by IJ, seeks to strike down a Pennsylvania law that permits Waterways Conservation Officers to enter any water or land—even private property—without a warrant to enforce fishing laws. Macon-Bibb County, Georgia demolished Eric Arnold’s home without providing notice or due process, violating his constitutional rights. Worse, when Eric tried to stop it, officials led him to believe he had succeeded while they secretly expedited the tear-down. Then they sent armed Code Enforcement officers to make sure that his house was torn down in the early hours of the morning. Eric knew the County was in the wrong, so he teamed up with Institute for Justice to sue Macon-Bibb County in state court and protect the rights of all Americans to due process and to ask for help from government officials. Christmas Eve 2022, Jennifer Heath Box was wrongfully arrested by Broward County, Florida sheriff’s deputies. The warrant was for Jennifer *Delcarmen* Heath, who was a different ethnicity, 23 years younger, 5" shorter, and had different hair and eye color. Despite these discrepancies, Jennifer was held in jail for three days, while her family fought to secure her release—causing her to miss Christmas and her final chance to see her son before his deployment with the marines. 🚨 New Case Alert 🚨 There was no reason to demolish Eric Arnold’s house. He was actively renovating it but the yard was neat, the exterior was clean, the house was locked up, and, most importantly, it was in a vastly improved state of repair compared to when he purchased it. But the county demolished it anyway as part of its aggressive blight fight. https://lnkd.in/egAAWZHc
