Research Associate

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is currently seeking a Research Associate to join our Assessment and Research team. The Research Associate will perform qualitative and quantitative research, including survey research and developing protocols for and conducting focus groups and interviews. Scope of research may include workforce evaluation, health service research, medical education, health equity, and quality that is relevant to supporting the mission of ABIM.


Reporting to the Vice President, Medical Education Research, the Research Associate has the following responsibilities:

  • Interface with other departments on project development and project management. Manage timelines for selected work streams.
  • Identify resources needed for projects to enable smooth project execution, effective collaboration, and the achievement of research objectives within specified timelines.
  • Develop and administer surveys to evaluate ABIM programs and support governance and leadership decisions; work with data analysts to interpret survey results. Advise other staff on survey development.
  • Contribute to development of scientific papers.
  • Develop and conduct presentations for senior-level leadership and external audiences.
  • Conduct literature searches and assemble key points from literature; draft research proposals.


A graduate degree in Sociology, Psychology, Population Studies, Health Communications, Health Policy, Public Health, or a related field, or equivalent professional background, with at least two to five years of relevant experience in survey research is required.


The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in qualitative research methodologies, including experience in conducting interviews and surveys and a working knowledge of statistical analysis. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential attributes. The ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as demonstrate a consistent commitment to working effectively across the organization is a must. Experience using SAS or R for statistical analysis and a familiarity with the use of large language models (AI) for data analysis is highly preferred.
