Residential Advisor

Location: Winston-Salem, NC

Status/Schedule: Full Time, Salaried, Live in 7 days on / 7 days off (including holidays)

HIRING RANGE: $34,000 to $40,000 annually

As a Residential Advisor, you will play a vital role in supporting the development and well-being of youth aged 16-21. You will be responsible for creating a safe and nurturing environment, promoting independent living skills, and helping residents navigate their personal growth journeys. This position requires flexibility, creativity, and a deep commitment to our mission. Each residence is home to up to 6 teens, with teams of Residential Advisors onsite, serving alternate shifts of 7 days on/7 days off.

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma, or GED required.
  • Prefer Bachelor's degree in human services or related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 2 years of experience working with teenage youth or adults.
  • Prior experience working with at-risk populations and trauma training preferred.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in assessing and addressing residents' and families' spiritual, emotional, educational, cultural, recreational, physical, and independent living needs as outlined in individualized service plans.
  • Plan and facilitate activities that connect residents to community resources and support their identified needs, including group activities and recreational events.
  • Educate residents on essential independent living skills such as money management, public transportation, education, and job skills (e.g., resume writing).
  • Assist residents in meeting their basic needs for food, clothing, and support, and help manage the household by overseeing the food budget and maintaining cleanliness.
  • Monitor and ensure residents' adherence to safety and program rules, including signing visitors in and out according to protocols.
  • Organize and lead cottage meetings, providing opportunities for residents to process their actions, decision-making, and community impact.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution and problem-solving in both individual and group settings, ensuring appropriate supervision at all times.
  • Maintain a respectful and inclusive environment, responding to primary emergencies and submitting reports related to progress, infractions, and emergencies.
  • Comply with all standards set by accreditation and licensing agencies.


Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of age-appropriate independent living skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate well in crisis situations and an understanding of cultural issues that can affect care.
  • Commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and antiracism in working with clients, and the ability to work with youth and coworkers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with youth, coworkers, and community collaborators.
  • Demonstrated discretion and independent judgment, with a passion for serving youth and families.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with computers and email is preferred.
  • Ability to laugh, be creative, and show willingness to learn from mistakes.
  • Enthusiasm and confidence in taking on tasks and challenges.
  • Valid Driver’s License, and willingness to drive a van and travel to various job-related locations.


Training Requirements

  • Staff must complete at least 24 hours of continuing education annually in the areas of child development, permanency planning methodology, group management, preferred discipline techniques, family relationships, human sexuality, health care and socialization, leisure time and recreation, or topics related to the needs of the client population (such as child sexual abuse or transitioning to adulthood).
  • Staff obtain CPR/FA certification and OSHA training within the first 30 days. Staff must maintain active CPR/FA certification.
