Position Overview
Safety Managers at Kiewit are integral in ensuring “Nobody Gets Hurt”. We hire people passionate about safety who will create, support, and audit our program which reinforces our commitment. Working closely with project teams, Safety Managers develop and implement protocols, conduct training programs, and monitor compliance with regulations and company policies. This role will be based on a construction project and will be involved in both safety management and field oversight to ensure safety for staff and craft employees, subcontractors, and consultants supporting the project.

Kiewit’s Southern California District operates with heavy civil, transportation, and water resource markets. Although most of our work is scattered across Southern California, we also pursue various projects across the west coast and Hawaii.
Location
This position will support projects in Hawaii. Relocation will be required, and relocation assistance can be provided to the right candidate.

Responsibilities
Safety Planning and Implementation:
- Develop and implement comprehensive safety plans and procedures specific to heavy civil, transportation, and water resource projects.
- Ensure that safety protocols are aligned with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and Kiewit's safety standards.
- Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards and assess safety risks.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and subcontractors. Provide guidance on safety-related certifications and qualifications required for specific job roles.
- Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability across all levels of the organization.
- Lead investigations into safety incidents, near misses, and accidents.
- Analyze root causes of incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Ensure timely reporting of all safety incidents in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Stay informed about changes in safety regulations and standards applicable to heavy civil, transportation, and water resource construction.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies. Coordinate with regulatory authorities during inspections and audits.
- Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure safety performance on projects.
- Conduct regular assessments and audits to evaluate adherence to safety standards and identify areas for improvement.
- Provide timely and accurate safety reports to project management and senior leadership.
- Education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. Years of experience will be considered in lieu.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction safety management, ideally with a focus on heavy civil, transportation and/or water resource projects.
- 30-hour OSHA construction safety class or equivalent within the last 5 years
- Professional certification in safety management, specifically CHST, Required. CSP, EM385,CPR/First Aid, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and OSHA/MSHA instructor certifications are preferred.
- An average of at least 24 hours of formal safety training each year for the past 5 years with training for competent person status in at least Four (4) of the following competencies: Excavation; Scaffolding; Fall protection; Hazardous energy; Confined space; Health hazard recognition, evaluation and control of chemical, physical and biological agents; Personal protective equipment and clothing to include selection, use and maintenance.
- USACOE or NAVFAC experience preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a safety program on projects of increasing complexity.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Good attention to detail, with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
- Strong work ethic - Willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
- Willingness to travel and relocate to project sites as needed.
- Regular, reliable attendance
- Work productively and meet deadlines timely
- Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment
- Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
- Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
