Specialist, Prospect Development

How You’ll Contribute

The Advancement team identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards individuals, as well as foundation, government and corporate partners who invest in the Society to drive impact through science, technology, education, exploration, and storytelling. The team collaborates across the Society to build transformative and impact-driven strategic partnerships. The team also produces global events that deepen connections and leverage the Society’s power to convene, and directs robust annual, major, and planned giving programs empowering the Society with a broad base of public support.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Prospect Development, within Advancement Insights, and working with a dynamic, interdependent, and collaborative team, the Specialist, Prospect Development will assist ongoing efforts to grow, enhance and innovate in the areas of prospect research, prospect management, and business intelligence to ensure the success of our Comprehensive Campaign.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Prospect Research (75%)

  • Identify and research new and current prospects and donors by reviewing and analyzing internal files and databases, news media, financial documents, online donor information systems, and other internal and external resources
  • Update CRM with capacity ratings and relevant data points needed for reporting and to prioritize prospects and key regions for fundraising outreach and event participation
  • Draft, revise, and edit philanthropic research documents, including event briefs, prospect profiles, meeting briefings, and memos
  • Provide research for special topics/projects and benchmarking
  • Adhere to recognized fundraising and research ethics policies and standards


Prospect Management (15%)

  • Support Insights team and frontline fundraisers in portfolio management, system updates, and creating a robust prospect pipeline to meet fundraising goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with Insights team and frontline fundraisers to execute moves management to ensure dynamic and balanced portfolios and promote data integrity
  • Promote policies, processes, projects, and strategies that drive effective donor qualification, solicitation, and relationship development


Data Integrity & Business Intelligence (10%)

  • Work with Insights team to develop data integrity checks and assist with prospect management-related data clean-up projects
  • Promote data insights necessary for effective prospect research and management through dashboard management and assisting with benchmarking, ad-hoc requests, and Advancement reporting requests related to prospect development
  • Provide recommendations for systematic identification of donors, prospects, and partners likely to be receptive to events, solicitation, and other forms of engagement and for likely avenues to engage them


What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor’s Degree Preferred Or Related Experience.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

3+ years of prospect development experience in a nonprofit organization

Necessary Knowledge And Skills

  • Proficiency with relational databases, preferably Raiser's Edge
  • Understanding of the donor development cycle and the role of prospect development within the cycle
  • Ability to deal with highly sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Motivated and dependable, ability to prioritize workload, manage time efficiently, consistently meet required deadlines
  • Detail-oriented and excellent interpersonal skills along with the ability to work effectively with groups and individuals


Desired Qualifications

  • Creative ability to envision how existing data could be utilized to improve processes, partnerships, and effectiveness to promote future growth
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge and Blackbaud NXT functionality including querying, exporting, and reporting to aid in prospect development business processes

Salary Information

National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position is $68,400 - $77,000.

Job Designation

Remote - Our Remote designation includes staff who must work in another location in the U.S. or abroad, such as our regional leads for our Education and International teams or regional fundraisers in Advancement. Staff may also be designated as Remote by their supervisors (with approval by the Senior Team lead) because of their job duties, and are afforded this status when it is beneficial to NGS, their respective team, and the employee.
