Job Description

Under limited supervision of the Security Manager and utilizing a customer service perspective and orientation, provides leadership to security personnel for the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff on the University of Maryland Medical Center campus.

Principal Responsibilities And Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Acting in a lead capacity, demonstrates and observes UMMS guest relations practices in providing directions and general information in accordance with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures. Resolves significant customer service challenges in a timely and professional manner. May provide shuttle/escort service to visitors and staff to locations within the Medical System campus.
  • Enforces Maryland State Law and Baltimore City Ordinances, along with hospital safety and security policies and procedures during assigned shift. Carries defense technology OC pepper foam and ASP expandable batons. Makes arrests as necessary.
    • Provides for the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff on the University of Maryland Medical System campus.
    • Protects Medical System property by observing patients, visitors, staff and equipment, noting irregular or suspicious behaviors, arresting persons who trespass or commit offenses and issuing parking violations when necessary.
    • Enforces hospital safety plans during emergencies or emergency drills by notifying staff of correct procedures or aiding staff in the evacuation of hospital patients. Serves as contact for Baltimore City Fire Department during emergencies in order to expedite response time.
    • Responds to calls from Support Operation Service Center (SOSC) and reports to emergency locations as directed to ensure the safety of patients and staff during helicopter and ambulance arrival and departures. Restrains uncooperative or violent patients using proper restraining techniques.
    • Facilitates the orderly ingress and egress of traffic to and from UMMC. Directs and controls traffic on public highways and roads adjacent to and in the immediate vicinity of the hospital campus as required.
  • Supervises the work activities of Security Officers assigned to a specific shift.
    • Conducts roll-call briefing on potential security/safety issues prior to assigned shift.
    • Writes and administers annual performance reviews. Director approves review prior to Squad Sergeant giving review to employee. Resolves employee grievances.
    • Responsible for administering corrective action.
    • Assigns officers to specific zones and/or posts each shift.
    • Recommends scheduling options to the Operations Manager to help ensure adequate staffing.
    • Reviews incident reports submitted during the shift for completeness and accuracy. Reports out of the ordinary incidents to the Security Manager.


Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. Associate of Arts degree or equivalent in one of the Social Sciences or a related field is preferred. Possession of Special Police Commission or eligibility to be commissioned by the Maryland State Police is required. Must successfully complete an olerosin capsicum course, which includes undergoing a direct exposure to the product.
  • Four years of experience in security or law enforcement is required. Experience in a hospital facility is preferred. Education may be substituted for some experience. Previous experience in a lead or supervisory role is required.
  • Completion of a CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) course on Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is required within one year of hire or placement into the position.


Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrated customer service skills including highly effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are required to work successfully with a diverse group of staff at various levels within the organization, to document incidents of violations and to give directions to patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety hazards, fire safety, suspect apprehension, arrest procedures, and building safety techniques are required.
  • Problem solving ability is required to ask probing questions of staff, patients, and visitors to assist in the gathering of information for investigations of reported safety/security incidents.
  • Possession of a valid Class C Maryland driver's license is required. Must be able to operate manual transmissions.
