Base pay range
The Underwriting Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all loan activities as they relate to Underwriting. Assists with the development, implementation and execution of loan fulfillment plans, policies, and goals that support organizational strategic objectives. Ensures that underwriting activities are conducted in accordance with established regulations, policies, practices, procedures and legal requirements. Analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of lending originations by developing, recommending and executing policy and program changes as appropriate. Collaborates with Operations Managers to ensure continuity and consistency across the enterprise. Maintains the quality and integrity of lending programs and services. Provides and promotes an environment of quality service both externally and internally. This position reports directly to the Chief Credit Officer
Essential Job Functions
- Five (5) or more years mortgage underwriting experience - Preferred.
- Three (3) years of supervisory or leadership experience. - Preferred.
- Knowledgeable in automated underwriting systems is preferred
- Knowledge with the Encompass Loan Origination System
- Knowledge in Non-QM and Home Equity/2nd Mortgages, a plus.
- Previous Mavent, CoreLogic, Interthinks, FHA, VA, DU, and LP experience preferred.
- Proven experience working in a fast paced, high volume, customer focused wholesale lending environment.
- Expert on Fannie, Freddie, FHA, VA & USDA underwriting guidelines
- Demonstrated knowledge of Agency and regulatory requirements
- High School diploma or GED required; some college preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
- Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast paced environment
- Ability to handle competing priorities effectively and within established timeframes
- Excellent interpersonal skills and positive attitude
Essential Job Skills
- Manage assigned mortgage underwriting staff (8-12).
- Manage performance of proactive pipeline routines.
- Provide support for escalated problem resolution.
- Resolve underwriting issues raised by our sales partners.
- Work with Operations leadership to determine training needs aimed at increasing production volume or improving loan quality.
- Identify negative trends associated with key areas such as compliance or loan quality and work directly with the team to provide solutions.
- Interface with internal operations and support areas to identify root cause of issues.
- Manage process and procedure changes or best practices and effectively communication them to your team.
- Manage direct reports so as to effectively evaluate, motivate, delegate and monitor their activities.
- Effectively communicate with internal and external management/clients/customers.
- Establish and monitor monthly forecasting targets.
- Perform hiring, training, and performance management process activities.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage in a fast paced, high volume, customer focused environment.
- Proven time management and problem solving skills.
- Effective in counseling subordinates, providing input and evaluating employee performance.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel and Visio.
- Expert in the “End to End” loan manufacturing process of wholesale residential lending
- Train new employees
- Facilitating customer-centric behaviors and a superior customer experience for both internal and external customers
- Keeping apprised of changes in Investor, Regulatory and Bank guidelines; integrating changes into daily processes
- Demonstrating time management skills for pipeline management and reviewing loan files within established service level agreements
- Preparing reports for Sr. Management
- Responding to e-mails and phone calls from internal and external customers within established service level agreements
- Review & resolve QC findings and trends
- Excellent interpersonal, communication (presentation, verbal and written) and project management skills.
- Ability to effectively manage and drive a high level of production while delivering a consistently exceptional customer experience.
