Energy Department

In this newly created department, the Energy Department is dedicated to managing and optimizing the energy resources required to power our data centers while promoting sustainability and efficiency. The Energy department plays a critical role in ensuring our operations are environmentally responsible, cost-effective, and resilient to energy market fluctuations. The team focuses on energy procurement, renewable energy integration, and the implementation of advanced energy management practices.

Position Overview

This role can be based in any of our US locations: Denver, CO; Phoenix, AZ; Santa Clara, CA; or Ashburn, VA, and can also be based remotely.

Vantage seeks an experienced polished Utility Business Development Power Contracting Manager to develop, foster, and own relationships and contracting with both new and existing power utility providers in the New Site Development group. The role will own all power contracting across our an assigned territory of the North American portfolio, including optimizing rate structures, leading negotiations, pursuing business development, and managing ongoing engagement with utilities. The right candidate will successfully manage utility spend across our growing footprint; report regularly to Vantage leadership; build new relationships and foster existing partnerships; and manage key project and engagement risks while coordinating with cross-functional teams across the Vantage platform.

Constant coordination with Market Development, Power Planning, New Site Development, Design, Construction, Operations, Sales, Solutions Engineering, Marketing, subject matter experts and the wider Executive Team (specifically with regards to strategic elements) will be required to keep pace with Vantage’s strategic land acquisition and leasing goals, including enhancing Vantage’s product and service offering wherever possible. Collaboration and integration in the sales lifecycle process as well as existing operational sites, including client interface alongside Solutions Engineering, are all integral to the role as well.

Essential Job Functions

Power Contracting and Utility Management:

  • Own all power contracting activities across the assigned territory within Vantage's North American footprint.
  • Develop and manage relationships with new and existing utilities, ensuring favorable rate structures and tariffs.
  • Lead negotiations and pursue business development opportunities with utility providers to support Vantage’s growth and operational needs.

Strategic Planning and Coordination:

  • Evaluate new markets and territories, conducting research and business development to establish utility relationships and contracting processes.
  • Coordinate with the Power Planning team to adjust contracts and rate structures based on capacity planning models.
  • Partner with the Sustainability team to align power contracts with Vantage’s sustainability goals and renewable energy initiatives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with Market Development, New Site Development, Design, Construction, Operations, Sales, and Solutions Engineering teams to support site evaluation and strategic planning.
  • Integrate utility contracting efforts into the sales lifecycle process, ensuring alignment with client needs and operational goals.

Rate Structure Optimization and Monitoring:

  • Develop familiarity with rate structures and associated risks in each relevant geography, maintaining models for expected power rate structures in coordination with Public Policy and Sales teams.
  • Monitor and optimize power spend across Vantage’s portfolio, coordinating with Operations and Billing teams to adjust contracts and utility engagements based on customer usage.

Utility Power Connection Agreements:

  • Lead the process to obtain and secure utility power connection agreements, including the procurement of renewable energy options where feasible.
  • Maintain up-to-date reporting on power agreements and status for all North American development projects, ensuring transparency and alignment with Vantage’s strategic objectives.

Risk Management and Reporting:

  • Manage key project and engagement risks related to utility contracting and engagement, providing regular reports to Vantage leadership on utility spend, contracting status, and strategic developments.
  • Ensure all power agreements and engagements are documented and tracked for compliance and ongoing management.

Additional Duties:

  • Handle additional duties as assigned by Management.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Energy Management, or a related field is preferred.

Experience:

  • 5 years experience in power contracting or utility business development; 8+ years preferred.
  • Renewable PPA negotiation, carbon markets, natural gas, and/or energy markets experience preferred.
  • Experience working with data centers or other similar large loads preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Working proficiency or fluency in French not required, but strongly preferred.
  • Experience negotiating utility connection agreements required.
  • Solid understanding of utility contracting, rate structures, as well as knowledge of energy use of organizations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Travel required is expected to be up to 25-50% but may increase over time as the business evolves.

Additional Details

  • Salary Range: $140,000 - $150,000 + Bonus (this range is based on Colorado market data and may vary in other locations)

  • Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including your qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience and may fall outside of the range shown.
