Youth Wellness Specialist

The Youth Wellness Specialist will focus on bringing wellness programming to youth at the Rita Bright Family & Youth Center. They will work with LAYC’s Food & Nutrition Program to lead hands-on cooking, gardening, and nutrition classes with Rita Bright youth. They will also support other Rita Bright programming, like arts and athletics.

LAYC/MMYC’s mission is to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through multicultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address youths' social, academic, and career needs. To achieve that mission, LAYC/MMYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 5,000 individuals annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behaviors, and guide youth toward successful adulthood. Essential Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead hands-on cooking, nutrition, and gardening programming with youth ages six to 13 in collaboration with LAYC's Food & Nutrition Program.
  • Assist in planning/leading other programming for youth, including art classes and athletics/fitness.
  • Work with Rita Bright staff to plan and lead camp activities during Spring Break, Winter Break, and Summer.
  • Supervise two Public Health AmeriCorps members, engaging them in wellness work with Rita Bright youth.
  • Support Rita Bright families with LAYC pantry services.
  • Data entry.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Experience planning and leading activities for youth.
  • Experience with cooking/nutrition education preferred.
  • Experience with urban gardening is a plus, but not required.
  • Will be required to obtain a Food Manager License.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings for school events.
  • Complete criminal and child abuse/neglect clearances.
  • Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.
  • LAYC/MMYC requires the COVID-19 vaccine of all its employees. You will be asked to provide proof of vaccination at the time of your interview and at your onboarding.

Physical Requirements

This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
